You should have a thin spring steel disk as in the image below. It is 0.20mm thick.

Thankfully I do have the pegs however everything around them is badly seized, I have removed the wheels to free off and repair. I have now stripped the entire machine to remove sludge and inspect internals. So far I have only found one worn bearing on the main pto shaft and all oil seals badly worn. I have dropped off the mill housing at a friend of mine to have rust removed and carry out some fabrication. I am now in the process of making a complete gasket set and I have sent the head gasket and manifold gasket away for reproduction.
Yes Charlie I have seen Sean’s amazing restoration on his Simar. He is my inspiration for my restoration. His descriptions and photos are excellent and nice and easy to follow. I may start a thread in the projects forum if that’s ok by admins.

Hi Roatavator, thanks for the pictures. Sadly something is not right internally. The inner hubs do not move at all, I have removed the forward clutch assembly but was going to be too loud to drive out the roll pin required to remove the remaining half of the clutch from the main shaft. That will have to wait to tomorrow! I have had a look over the engine and the main bearings are in bad shape. Do you have a good method for flywheel removal? I can’t see how to attach a puller. I thought about splitting the crankcase and using a press however am worried the force may break the engine casing. As for the gearbox itself it is full of sludge so I feel a complete strip down is warranted. Also there is evidence of leakage at the gear casings so I will make up completely new gaskets and replace the oil seals. It will be a long slow project but I am 100% committed and have access to some very clever engineers!

I think most household insurance policies cover for theft from sheds. If not then you could change to one that does or amend your own. You just have to work out what it is worth to you to see if it falls within the insurance cover. Purchase price, anything you have spent on it and what it would cost to replace should you need to. Keep an eye for adverts to give you an idea of sale price. I like that, would like one myself, that’s the trouble with looking on this forum. Got enough projects already.

Well my £9.46 ignition coil arrived from China and guess what ? it was wrong, the mounting holes were 64mm apart rather than 59mm.
So I ordered a genuine one from a dealer at a cost of £45 and guess what ? it was made in China.
Anyway my rotavator started 1st pull despite standing for over 2 years & having stale fuel.
Lastly a big thanks to this forum & especially wristpin for his help.

Good news! My engineer friend has said he can repair the piston! I may have to wait a while. He will also resleeve the cylinder. My next concern is that when I put the machine into forward or reverse, it appears to have no drive to the wheels. I can see the forward and reverse clutches are ok and the Miller drives ok. I am going to commit myself to a full strip and inspection. I believe this will be worth it in the long run although it may get expensive.

Have you tried a different spark plug?

Mate of mine brought an MG6, we got it going & fitted a NGK plug. It ran fine till it packed up. He messed around for days with it till I went over. All it would do was bang & back fire.

In the end we fitted an old Champion D16 plug from an stationary engine & bingo she runs a treat!

Hi Charlie, yes another drawing would be fantastic! The engineer is quite confident that he can either repair this piston or make me a new one. The drawings are invaluable as gaining spares is impossible! I really want to restore this machine to the same level as my Monrotiller but first I need to see how much time and expense is required to raise the piston. The cylinder will be easily repaired with a sleeve and I can have new rings made. Thanks once again, Alastair

I took the barrel and piston to the machine shop today. He said he can resleeve the bore no problem however the piston will be a challenge but can be done. Note on my photo the large groove io the side of the piston, caused by a wayward gudgeon pin clip. Is there meant to be any sort of groove on the piston? I am not sure if I am looking at pure damage or if there is some kind of port arrangement among the damage. I found a photo of a similar Simar (55?) that shows the piston without any groove.
It is worth mentioning at this point that your assistance is invaluable Charlie, I am indeed very grateful for all your input.

Hello everyone. I have just saved a Simar 56 from scrap and have found it to have no compression. A quick strip down found severe damage to the piston and cylinder from a dislocated piston pin clip. I am going to try The engineer tomorrow to see if he can reuse it but I’m not holding my breath! I am in NZ and have not been able to find any parts here for it! If anyone has any spares please let me know! Thanks heaps.
