ParticipantHello Andrew
As far as is known the skimmers were just used by waterboards although you would think that there would be a number of other uses, I could have used them for harvesting peat but they were very very slow travelling as they had a further reduction gear in the drive train.
ITC and ITW tractors were used in foundries particularly in the sand beds for ingot casting, they were fitted with a type of ridging plough that formed the ingot shapes. Fascinating machines and such a shame that they were ahead of their time and not marketed as well as they could have been, how long was it after the WR8 that the bobcat came along and built a world market if onlt ransomes had hung in a bit longer who knows?
Neil Jarrett keeps talking about writing a book, I wish he would he is a mine of information and has a lot of literature. Do you have a Ransomes Crawler if so you may be interested in attending the 80th anniversary of the MG tractor to be held at Tractor World Malvern 27th 28th February next year, we are hoping to have at least one of every model that Ransomes made on display.July 3, 2015 at 2:35 pm #13666expeatfarmer
ParticipantI would be very interested in any Ransomes MG literature you may have.

ParticipantHi Jerry
Your MG40N looks good very original. Neil Jarrett is definitely the man for spare bearings and hub seals etc. Does the engine run? I recently bought a similar machine from South of France, a good degrease /pressure was followed by a spray over with WD40 makes a huge difference to the appearance. Will you be using the machine or just for show?June 27, 2015 at 8:38 am #13576expeatfarmer
ParticipantHi James Neil is your man for a diaphragm.
The only issue with the TVO manifold may be that straight petrol will vaporise in the manifold before it reaches the cylinder which may cause poor running when hot. On the basis that the side valve engine is pretty inefficient and the tractor has obviously run since the change I would expect that you will have no problems using low grade petrol.June 24, 2015 at 9:23 am #13551expeatfarmer
ParticipantI have now started work on the engine and find that I am missing the alloy cover that goes over the valve springs and tappets. I have contacted the previous owner with no luck, if anyone has one or a complete/part T series Sturmey Archer engine I would be very grateful. There may be a dead mower out there that has the same part or engine. 016974 78292. Thanks

ParticipantThank you Trusty It certainly is a clever machine and ideal for dragging dead crawlers around.

ParticipantI hope it has a good clutch and brakes if the hills are that steep you work on!

Participant2 1/4 will be the width of cart wheel tyre this would have been used on. I agree they only used one drag to slow down one side rear wheel as it took a man with a chain or rope to slip it in place and pull it out again.

ParticipantHi Lars welcome to fun with Ransomes.
The front jockey wheel is interesting was the machine used for pulling timber and the jockey for riding over tree stumps?
Next year is the 80th anniversary of the Ransomes MG tractor we are planning a display at Tractor World Malvern Worcester over the weekend of March 12th. It would be fantastic to have some Norwegian visitors but appreciate it is an expensive trip, we have interest from fgrance ,Australia, USA and New Zealand and plan to have a display of photographs of MG tractors around the world, once complete if you would e mail me some photos and details I will put you on display. jonathan@growingmedialtd.co.ukMay 30, 2015 at 8:19 pm #13228expeatfarmer
ParticipantAt First look I thought they may be a cart chock or skid to slow a cart down on hills but it looks as if it is made of brick clay and is a 2/14 ” size so unless it is some sort of brick mould Pass !!!
