    Hi
The engine will be a bit smokey especially when cold, excess fuel from starting builds up in the exhaust and manifold which does not help.
A number of things can be done to help reduce smoking, drain any excess oil that has collected in the crankcase as this will be drawn up by the two stroke ( plug in centre of crank case base )clean the gauze filter next to the oil filter , this is the crankcase breather if blocked adds to pressure and smoking. oil can also collect in the reed valve chamber which is below the air intake strangler take this off clean it in diesel and replace.

My Draytons will start with no wick from cold after a few turns on really cold days I heve replaced wicks with a glow plug which I obtained from Neil Jarrett I believe they are a citroen part. J.W. Stennett of Ipswich had a box full of cartridges the last time I was there. Hope this helps.

Colortune is a very useful piece of kit ,it is literally a glass topped spark plug that lets you see into the head at the time of firing. It enables you to adjust the slow running mixture to achieve slow and smooth tick over ( shows up blue flame ) but also lets you see the colour and quality of the spark under compression. made by Gunson.
You said you had two MG2 ,I would be tempted to try swapping the magnetos, it may be that the magneto coil is failing, alternatively have your coil tested.
I have had similar problems with an MG2 that was to my mind set up perfectly and found that the position of the throttle lever at starting can be critical, it should be open about 1/4 throttle on the butterfly but you may need to inch it either way to get it to fire. On occasions I have also had to fit three different spark plugs ( new ones ).

What type of plug cap are you using? some have a high resistance and are not suitable for magnetos that may cause arcing at the points.

Try using a color tune, you
will see spark under compression and quality of mixture.

I spoke to a guy at Pennine Oils asking for an equivalent to the specified oil grades, they have supplied me with a Universal sAE 20 with a high detergent level to keep the sludge in suspension. 20L delivered to my door next morning for 24p per litre!

Thanks Rob, just spraying up a new fuel tank that Neil made for me for the Whitlock literally watching paint dry so that I can fit it and start it up for a clutch trial.

    Hi Graeme
Sounds like it may be a fuel issue take out the jets and blow them through with an air line.
In the past I have had similar issues and now as a matter of course if I want to start a particular tractor I go through all the key items remove and clean carb and jets, change petrol to fresh new. remove magneto and clean and reset points, check valve clearance, new spark plug. Then go for it.

For a first shot I would drain out old petrol from tank, clean carb and then try again.
    Good luck.

After sorting an oil leak and manufacturing a set of oak swamp blocks the digger is now finally finished and ready for Malvern next week. I am also taking my Whitlock WR8 which now has a new clutch plate and hopefully works properly. I have also fitted it with swamp blocks and refurbished the engine and engine bay.

I recently heard of a guy that ploughed with an MG6 which he had converted to run on 4 wheels as per the ITW, apparently there were complaints from other ploughmen that his tractor was non-standard. I guess that if you are good then people will always try to knock your success unfortunately. Surely the skill in vintage ploughing is making the best of an old machine and within reason what you pull it with is irrelevant.

    Many thanks.
Given that there are a huge number of members owning wheeled or tracked machines, is it something that could be looked at so that all members can get full value from membership without having to seek separate cover. Apologies if this has been raised previously.

The button you pull out for starting is the excess fuel button it puts an extra dose of fuel into the system to help starting when cold, very common on most diesel engines. With the engine being a two stroke it will tend to be a bit smokey, once the whole crankcase is hot after running for some time it should get less, but then there may be loads of old oil and crud in the crankcase that has to burn off. there are a number of diesel additives that will help to clean it out. Again burning the carbon out of silencers used to be common on old two stroke motorcycle engines.
