ParticipantJohn , not picking it up until tomorrow. The ones I have seen have been all Yellow , a mixture of various greens and red , one was a blue engine , no paint at all on the (alloy) gearbox and with green handles with red wheels………. hence I’m a tad confused. Knowing me it may never get painted , and put straight to use.

ParticipantJohn , that’s a great shame , I know how much pride you give your machines , both restoring them and above all showing them.
I personally find it quite sad that many of our machines are hidden away in sheds by hoarders , that never see the light of day , most of which don’t even run , but as the saying goes each to their own. I really hope the Atco falls into your category.
I always try to help out the genuine restorer , but when a hoarder comes a calling they have no chance whatsoever.Andy.

ParticipantJamie , gland seal bush goes in first , followed by the spring washer , then main bearing. I would strongly recommend fitting new gland seal bushes and springs , along with new main bearings if you wish the engine to run and perform well.
Above anything run the machine on a mixture of STRAIGHT 30 grade oil & 16 to 1 ratio.Andy.

ParticipantJohn , of the top of my head I can only recall two machines fitted with MK25s , with this type of govenor arrangement , one being your Atco mower , and the other a Wrigley (or Bonser ??) motor truck , hence why technical info is thin on the ground.
It seems an odd sort of system , but trust me once set correctly works very well indeed.Andy.

ParticipantJohn , externally it looks as it should , when not running the butterfly should be in the wide open position , when engine starts , it should then govern down. When you have it running , can you feel any manual resistance on the govenor rod , in other words feel it trying to shut down , if you can’t , it could be an internal problem with the govenor weights.
One other point , have you removed the linkage from the govenor shaft , and not refitted in the same position.Andy.

ParticipantThen all seems in order John , the cable merely operates on the carb slide , there is no cable for the govenor linkage. The MK15 engine on the Howard Bantams works on exactly the same principle , amongst a few others.

ParticipantJohn , it’s a slide type carb , and would certainly have had a throttle cable.

ParticipantDarren , they are still available on that well known auction site , by the way your parts went in yesterdays post.

ParticipantDarren , obviously the Carb and magneto parts are Villiers , as this engine is unique to Atco , I suspect that they had this produced by Villiers at their design/request.
I’m almost certain I have one of those floats , and more than likely a good bowl , that you are most welcome to FOC. I’ll have a gander in the morning.Andy.

ParticipantDarren , it’s an Atco/Villiers , only ever used on Atco products.

ParticipantJohn , the needle and seat assembly is common to all those variations of Villiers carbs.

ParticipantAngus , very well put , it’s amazing the ammount of “perfect paint jobs” you see around being spoilt by oil leaks , often caused by not enough attention to relatively minor points like a correctly working breather.
