I doubt I’ll be collecting each one. There’s an awful lot of changes.
My father used to be a dealer in the early days for belle. He used to have a standing order for a Lorry load every few weeks. At one time he found it the most cost effective to hire new ones out for about 6 weeks, then sell them as almost new at cost price, whilst making his profit on the hire charges.
I believe this one dates from the end of the 1960’s with a slightly later engine fitted.

    Hi Charlie,
i’m collecting all Grunder machines of the produktion and concern onself with the history, as far as possible…

Compare the motor number your machine with mine!

The fist two numbers are probably the vintage (1918)? My Maschine was probably later modificated, therefore two numbers(?) …/…

    Sincerely
    David Muster

It ran when I acquired it, however it was a pig to start. Since then I’ve had the injector rebuilt,so should now start well. As soon as the back end is on to balance out the machine(it’s very front end heavy and has a habit of tipping up) I will bleed the fuel system out and try again.

Been meaning to update this project for a few weeks. The build up has slowly continued. After flattening back the bonnet I decided the only thing to do was to resprayed it again. New old stock badges have been fitted all round as well.
Originally I was going to fit a salvaged set of rotor covers off a Dowdeswell, however without going into boring rivet counting details, they aren’t quite right. So I have swapped some engine parts for a good second hand set of period correct ones. These will need a bit of straightening and I’ve already welded the rear trailing board back into place.

    Hello,
i’m from Switzerland and unfortunately I don’t speak english!

To the Pictures: this is a license of a Grunder Tiller (built by Grunder & Co Binningen / Basel, Switzerland from 1917 untill to 1925), and the Engine seems (license?) M&V: Müller & Vogel St. Aubin, Suisse.
I have two machines, not complete (see photos).

Well, Thank you all for your suggestions, I will get to it this weekend and report back, The timing suggestion is a challenge, drove me mad trying to get it right when I restored it, got quiote confused about wether the timing should include the “Impulse Starter” spring or not! so that probably does need a look, and YES it does run HOT!, I will clean out the carb and have a look at that as well, the suggestion from stuart regarding the tines is a new one on me, Is it possible to fit them wrong?.. In the meantime… Back to the Merry Tiller!…

On a different subject.. Took my grandson Go Carting, Noticed that all the machines that rip round the track flat out all day have Honda GX engines, asked the chap if he had tried any of the “Chonda” Chinese copies, He laughed and said he had, and they had fallen to bits! had to replace with original Honda engines.. Tell us something I suppose. Night All.. Plonker

Finished this machine off yesterday, handlebars were shotblasted and repainted, new r-clips fitted and even the original cable clips cleaned up nicely.

I can take and post a pic of my throttle linkage over the weekend, but I’m not sure it’ll help you as mine has been altered at some time in its life. The air filter has been removed, and the filter bracket repositioned to one of the crank case bolts to hold the end of the throttle linkage by passing it through one of the filter mounting holes – something I need to sort out when I can find an air filter!

    Re your Halfords issue .

The question is what happens to people who have no E Mail (Yes they do exist !!) Do they have no Guarantee ? No of course not If your wire brushes are faulty or it states they will last 10 years and 2 days work trashes them , you have a legitimate claim . I would return them and explain the situation but it will be up to Halfords good will to replace them .
If you want an avalanche of unsolicited emails from who ever Halfords sell your details to please feel free to giving them your details .
A lot of places now ask for your E mail address to send the Receipt to, Nope print me one I have proof then that I have purchased the item .

My advice is stick to the old system It works !! Each Contact detail you give is worth around £5.00 to them .

When they ask me I always ask for written proof that they will not use my E Mail address for any other business or sell it on . That seems to stop them asking

OK thanks for all the advice finally convinced my self there is something more seriously wrong with the engine . It does seem to be down on compression , just by turning it over . I have run the engine for some years with out the main govenor spring so may be this overstressed the engine and finally killed it . bought a replacement K141T off that well known auction site and it runs and starts well .

As I said with the old engine failure Initally once the coil, points and condenser were replaced she ran well . On dragging her out of the shed the day after spending 2 hours or so using her, she fired up well and ran then suddenly died , not actually rotavating, just in travelling set up just like hitting the kill switch . Having run her out of fuel the day before, I suspected dirt in the Carb, cleaned all ok. Now the spark seems to come and go !!! I can get a spark then nothing tipping fuel in the plug hole should get her to fire , but she doesn’t . Checked that the timing is repeating ie points open with the crank in the same position each time seems OK not checked the static timing yet

I have as I said replaced the engine for now and things seem OK Will have to strip unit down to find out what is wrong I have known timing gears to fail my suspicions lie with the Valve gear / broken spring dropped valve what ever . The really annoying thing is my wife works for Kohler, and I still have real trouble getting spares .

Anyone know the best place to get the magnito repaired. Never done one and don’t want to trash it.
