I have just acquired an Allen scythe that requires a complete restoration.

The engine cover has a machine number code of 6595 and the transmission casing has the number VC 396.

I would be most grateful id someone can advise me as to the likely age of the machine and also the engine type that is fitted.

The Museum of English Rural Life (MERL) at Reading hold records of Allen Scythe serial numbers.

    Thank you for your replies.

I have had a closer look at the machine number and noticed that there is a very faint ‘1’ at the end making a correct number of 65951. I shall follow this up as recommended with MERL in Reading.

I have tried uploading a photo without success as yet.

65951 makes it late 1952 but MERL will be more precise
