ParticipantOK so you have fuel, and the spark at the plug is good (and at the correct time / advance) then you must have a compression related problem.Check valves, valve clearences, worn piston and cylinder bore, leaking head gasket etc etc.
Drop some fuel down the spark plug hole and fit a new spark plug.If the compression is good then the engine should at least fire a few times and if the carburettor is good and the jets are clean etc etc then it should keep running:):)March 7, 2015 at 8:06 pm #11977stuart
ParticipantIts a S11OO model from the late 1980,s.The gearbox (transaxle) is made by Peerless. If you put the gear lever in the Neutral position the tractor should be able to be pushed either forwards and backwards easily (presuming the parking brake is not on of course or the gearbox internals / differential are not damaged).

ParticipantI remember he lifted the bonnet up and showed me a plaque (either on the engine or on the bodywork……I cant quite remember now) but it definitely stated B40 now you mention that model Charlie. Its possible his is “the other surviving example” if Bonhams sold one.
My neighbour is a Landrover collector so he knows what it is and its rarity.February 28, 2015 at 9:58 pm #11907stuart
ParticipantOne of my neighbours has an old 1950,s ?? Landrover which has a Rolls Royce petrol engine fitted in it from new.

ParticipantThat I don’t know im afraid John.It would be a case of having the machine in front of you and working it out oneself.Let us know how you get on.

ParticipantThe Dowdeswell 650 rotavator (what the Howard Gem became after Dowdeswell engineering brought them out in approx 1985) was fitted with a Ruggerini RF120 diesel.I don’t know what the differences are between the correct RF120 engine and your replacement RY120 engine are though as I only have a parts list for the RF models. My parts lists for the Ruggerini engine gives a Dowdeswell part number of 27473 for a “Drive adaptor nut”.The Ruggerini part number for the flywheel nut is 325-84 and for the PTO end is 323-35.Dont know if any of the above is any help to you or not but hope you get it sorted as they are excellent machines.

ParticipantI believe the transmission was the weak area on these machines.I know someone who used one regularly on his allotment 25 odd years ago and when the gearbox broke he scrapped it.He did give me his original owners manuals and a rotavator attachment.I think your best bet would be to have the gears made but it will cost many £££££££,s

ParticipantThe 1970,s Landmaster “Lynx” 5hp rotavator used one of these engines.

ParticipantThe 11hp Briggs and Stratton engine as used on the Gazelle uses unleaded fuel.If the engine has an extended oil filler (dipstick) the lower and upper oil level markings are clearly stamped on the metal dipstick. If the engine only has a plastic filler screw / cap then fill the sump to the top of the threads.Oil quantity will be approx 1.25L.The alternator (stator) is underneath the flywheel so would require removal. The flywheel has 2 threaded 5/16UNC holes to aid removal using a puller. The alternator has 2 wires coming from it.It is rated at 3A and is unregulated. The red wire is the battery charging wire (it has a “bulge” in it which is the diode and rectifies the AC current into DC current for charging the battery). The other stator wire provides AC current for headlights (if fitted).

ParticipantI guess its threaded on.It may be a LH thread so try turning it clockwise and see if it,ll come of.Some heat on it will help too.

ParticipantIm sure any similar silencer will be fine.Maybe one from an old 1970,s Wheelhorse will suit if you can find a good, solid one that can be brazed on the pipe.
Have you a picture of what the original silencer should look like ??. -
