Please can anyone help locate a handbook for a Westwood Gazelle 11hp mower? I think it was made around 1980 but that’s about as far as I have got and would like to know about oil quantities, what fuel,it takes, and how to change the alternator. Any clues gratefully received.

    Many thanks

The 11hp Briggs and Stratton engine as used on the Gazelle uses unleaded fuel.If the engine has an extended oil filler (dipstick) the lower and upper oil level markings are clearly stamped on the metal dipstick. If the engine only has a plastic filler screw / cap then fill the sump to the top of the threads.Oil quantity will be approx 1.25L.The alternator (stator) is underneath the flywheel so would require removal. The flywheel has 2 threaded 5/16UNC holes to aid removal using a puller. The alternator has 2 wires coming from it.It is rated at 3A and is unregulated. The red wire is the battery charging wire (it has a “bulge” in it which is the diode and rectifies the AC current into DC current for charging the battery). The other stator wire provides AC current for headlights (if fitted).

Just out of curiosity, why do you wish to change the alternator?
You can date the engine precisely from the Code number stamped into the blower housing ( engine cowling) if it was made in 1980 the number will start 80 followed by the day and the month, say 2408. Any digits after that refer to the shift/ production line on which it was made. Assuming that it’s the original engine the tractor was probably made within six months of it.
Westwoods of that era usually has a sticker which often included the year of manufacture. Sometimes the sticker was on the inner engine side of the steering wheel console but could also be on the inner chassis side plate by the cut out for the spare fuel can, or if the machine is so equipped, under the seat in the opening for the power take off pulley for the power grass sweeper.
