Gave myself a good dowsing in Chamomile Lotion and purchased a manual. As the cricket season is fast approaching, time is not on my side.
Anyway, after opening up the gearbox, it was pretty obvious as to what was wrong. The input shaft has sheared just behind one of the bearings and one of the large driven gears which houses the clutch discs is in need of some extreme dentistry, as it has lost most of it’s teeth!!

Maybe someone sometime has mounted the sealings inside-out?

Anyhow, I will propably use the machine anyway. At least this summer.
I poured some sticky gear-oil in it (should be motor oil) that stays quite good inside the rotavator so that I can run it for some hours.

Okay thanks very much – Its been in the shed for a year or so now, so is dry. Last time I summoned the energy to try and get it going I had cleaned the points with wet n dry and set the gap, new spark plug, new length of HT lead with a new contact cap on….. and not a sausage (or at least, no spark…). I’ll have it on the bench at the weekend and can give it another solid test, but it’s encouraging to know that it’s possible to get new parts.

OK thanks Neil thats a couple of things to have a look at when the weather calms down. I might try to post a photograph if I can work out how. The adjuster does turn but doesn’t move the points enough. I may just take it all out again to see if I can see something strange going on. I think from your description the cam is the correct one. I will confess when I work out what I have done wrong!

So that’s what the crumbs were in the bottom of the bag. And there’s me thinking they were something horrible and all they were was crumbs off the porky pie. With all these crumbs it’s been difficult to climb up to see out again, but I managed it this morning to be greeted with a wide panoramic view of somewhere. It’s flat enough to be The Fens, but somehow I don’t think it is.

Not getting a lot of opportunity to work on this due to a change in career but starting to scratch my head a bit now. I have put the new points in but now I am unable to get the points gap correct. Either I have done or am doing something stupid or somebody has messed about with the magneto before our ownership. On the basis that the highest point of the cam is opposite the slit therefore that should be the point at which the gap should be greatest I have wound the adjusting screw as far as it will go but am still only getting a gap of 0.010 of an inch at maximum adjustment. I am quite happy to be called stupid as long as somebody can tell me what is going on!

That was very shrewd of you, Alan. In a quiet moment when nobody was looking I decided to head off and try to find another home. I was offered a lift on a returning tractor, so I’m off on my travels to see the wide world (I’d always guessed there was more of it outside the lounge window).

And what a great show it turned out to be. The weather was warm all weekend and lots of people came to see the displays in the halls.

At least, I think they did because somebody kidnapped me from the stand on the Saturday and I’ve been bouncing around in the bottom of a dark bag for the last week. If I can just get to see out of the bag I will take a photo. Maybe someone will recognise the location and come and rescue me!

Well the flywheel is off! My puller broke but I managed to press it off! It took 15 tons to shift it!
