Hi Charlie, just a quick note to pass on my thanks for your reply and most useful link. After further investigation it appears the exhaust valve is burnt out and probably led to someone constantly cranking the engine and knackering the dynastart. Also it looks like someone has wired the coil wiring to the battery wire on the dynstart and might explain why the coil isn’t working… think I’ve found a company that can repair.

Okay…. we’re in business! Neil – thanks for the condenser replacement, i’ve replaced it and given the points a polish while I’m at it and there’s a good spark now when holding the HT lead to ground.

Just need to get back to the allotment and get it back on the machine…. re-do the timing…. fresh petrol…. moment of truth.

Watch this space (although doubt it will be for a while yet).

Thanks for your help this far.

The reason the points wouldn’t adjust was because a piece of the brown insulating material was wedged behind so that was easily corrected. The coil seems to show the right amount of resistance and I have cleaned everything up so I can’t work out why there is no spark. Is there anything else I can test? I presume the insulating material is only to act on the breaker spring and therefore has no need to be behind the fixed points?

One handed use? That’s got trip to A&E written all over it. It does sound expensive, must have been two or three weeks wages?

I have one that is missing the diff gears and diff housing, it would be great to find parts or someone wiling to sell a tractor. Otherwise help with photos of how it goes together would help me. As it came in bits and I also have lots of parts missing. I have just made the brackets that go on the side of the gearbox.

Making a chain tensioner at the moment as assume it had one, but would be nice to know what it looks like.

    HI, thanks for the response.

The engine doesn’t have a separate ignition coil (like a mini) the flywheel has a magnet attached on the inner side and bolted inside is a fixed ignition coil. Does the coil need a 12v feed to energise or is the electricity created by the magnet rotating the fixed coil? There is a black wire from the points that follows the HT lead out of the engine casing, is this an earth?

I will upload a couple of pictures to help.

    Thank you

    Paul

Andy, I quite agree with your reasoning re the hoses, etc….

Internet research reveals the following –

    ILO engines/moteurs
Engine manufacturer ILO Motorenwerke was a major manufacturer of 2 stroke engines from 1911 until its decline in 1990’s. The company was founded by Heinrich Christiansen to produce 2 stroke engines at Altona, for many diverse uses. In 1923 to 1925 they also produced a range of motorcycles. In 1959 they where purchased by Rockwell international industries, who produced a range of snow mobiles, then later in 1977 they where acquired by machine giant Tecumseh. Under the Tecumseh brand they continued to expand production to supply engines for lawn mowers, compressors and agricultural items until the mid 1990’s. During there production history ILO produced, trains, all manor of engines but principally 2 stroke, (in fact in 1954 they where the largest producer of 2 stroke engines in West Germany with 184 000 units sold and over 1500 employees). Energic used ILO engines in many motoculteurs, motobinuses and motofaucheuse machines of there day. And to there credit, with the strength and quality of these engines, many Energic machines survive and are in daily use throughout France today.

The hydraulic hub mounted motors intrigued me, as clearly they were commercially manufactured; however no matter how hard I stared at them, I could not see any maker’s mark, etc…

Attached is a photograph of the engine maker’s plate, for info.

One line I have looked at using the Internet, is the fact that Coventry Climax, Massey Ferguson, and Warwick University (Motor Research Facility) are all within spitting distance of each other. Just a thought.

This same machine appeared at the Stanfield Plough Day 2019, this morning. The present owner had brought it on a trailer in the hope that those attending would be able to help with identification.
The current owner gave the same basic history with the machine having been acquired from Coventry Climax just prior to them closing down. The purchased stored it in a shed, which in turn collapsed, entombing the machine. The machine was then sold on and then changed hands once more to the current owner.
The engine is a 2 stroke engine, very similar to the SACHS unit; powers an hydraulic pump, which in turn feeds oil under pressure to all wheels. The owner stated that it can be adjusted to be either 2 OR 4 wheel drive.
The construction is clearly not held together with chewing gum, and is sturdy to say the least. Other than the manufacturer’s name plate on the engine there are no other identification marks. The seat is very similar to the Massey Ferguson style, with provision for a padded back rest secured by two welded studs.
If the provenance is to be believed then it would not be unreasonable to use the description of a factory mule from an R & D Unit.
A very interesting vehicle even as it currently stands.

The head gasket on the bsa is copper. It can be reused if it’s not damaged. It can be annealed, by heating and quenching. This returns it to a soft state and will then seal again.
