vhgmcbuddyMemberP.s :
– could not get the casings back together to store.
Not a fault but simply cannot get it back together.
Has two small ball bearings too that can drop out.
This will have to wait , be cleaned out re greased
IF
I can get a drive shaft for it.I think the answer to that is – not a chance!
Q) not that I am going down this route but if I was an
obsessive and wanted this transaxle back working
is it possible ?
Are there co panies that repair , re build or make
de9ve shafts ?
(I’d just like to know for when all parts si only run out
when I am 186 years old )May 30, 2020 at 12:14 pm #34533
vhgmcbuddyMemberTransaxle casings split and issues found:
Summary:
Torx head bolts – were set to 6-7nm torque
No stuck bolts or stripped threads. Good case surfaces.Broken brake pad metal guide / spacer (49) (as per pic)
(dana part num 5036)No gasket used just remnants of instant gasket.
Broken drive shaft at end 37 (dana part num 3997) as per pics
Need to know:
– spec for brake pads thickness
– Where to get parts (Have contacted Murray and Hayter)

vhgmcbuddyMemberMany thanks for advice. They are soaked in pen’ oil
and they all seem to have hex heads.
I mechanicallu restore vintage 70’s 80’s motorbikes
so am armed with all necessary for stubbornness!Points taken though.
Might delve into transaxle today.
What on earth could cause the issue I am seeing though
internally ..?May 29, 2020 at 7:50 pm #34525
vhgmcbuddyMemberI thought that was the case. Thanks for that, did you fit them yourself?

vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks guys.
It is as you say. Have stacks of chain saw oil
so might use that but bike chain lube too….Thing is this mower has become like
my motorbikes and now can never be sold and
will always be repaired .
Indeed the plan now is on the go extended
maintenance for this season.Thanks. I am still on the transaxle project
and will split cases when my second hand one arrives
and mower going again.
I simply must fix this seemingly minor internal issue.May 29, 2020 at 8:46 am #34518
vhgmcbuddyMemberUodate:
– await second hand transaxle to arrive
– emailed Murray and Hayter as to where I can get parts
for Spicer/ dana 4450 3 transaxles.
– still to split broke transaxle cases to investigate if anything
obvious has shifted or broken.May 28, 2020 at 9:24 am #34513
vhgmcbuddyMemberTest :
A)
With gearbox in gear and input shaft locked to prevent it turning, if you turn one half shaft does the other one turn in the opposite direction?
– yes . (No need to hold the input shaft tight as simply
doesnt turn) this in reverse and forward gears.B) If you turn both together in the same direction with gearbox in gear does the input shaft turn or try to turn?
– No it does not turn and undetectable if it is trying to turn.I will go to the bitter end with this and fix even though
I have another coming in a weeks time.
It will be a useful exercise and may help if I can fix
and find a place for the parts required. On that note thinking forward is there a place
anyone knows of for transaxle parts ?May 27, 2020 at 2:43 pm #34505
vhgmcbuddyMemberOld transaxle external drive pulley components:
As per pics but a washer and a key to stop pulley rotating freely are worn.
Not useless but worn to almost non functionality.
(Not the reason for this drive problem)found a online parts diag for a transaxle – Spicer dana 4450 3
pic shows input shaftMay 26, 2020 at 12:29 pm #34496
vhgmcbuddyMemberUpdate:
I have bought another transaxle (100£) , the same for sure,
so can sort this transaxle at leisure. So this thread continues in two branches.
I’ll split the transaxle I have and see
what the input rod thing is doing.
Does that sound like a plan ?
(Without your help I’m finished !!!!!)May 26, 2020 at 10:44 am #34491
vhgmcbuddyMemberUpdate.
Transaxle out as per pics. (pics reduced for site convenience)
Jacked up on tow bar, wheels off , brake and clutch disconnected from rear pins,
drive belt hooked over pulley, 4 bolts holding transaxle – now off– if i put TA (Transaxle) in gear on bench and turn axles A and B they turn the other
side respectively. BUT not the drive pulley. that remains stationary.– the drive pulley is made to pull off after removing a (circle hlding washer – cant think of the word) so the pulley itself is ok.
– When in gear , drive pulley on, and i turn the drive puller i can see for the smallest amount
of time the axles move for a millimeter but then stop and the pulley moves freeley. So that is the analysis …… it must now be internal.
I will gunk down the TA and spray the bolts with pen’ oil and will consider
going deeper. But I think i can find another for 100£ which may save me for now.

vhgmcbuddyMemberMany thanks …… what a site this is .
I cant tell you how thankful I am.I will remove the transaxle today and investigate.
I will update the post.May 25, 2020 at 6:58 pm #34485
vhgmcbuddyMemberWhen you say input pulley is that what I see as the drive pulley ?
as per in pic.splines in the pulley or the rod it sits on (clearly needing transaxle splitting) ?
I can have the transaxle out tomorrow (I am expert at managing old stuck bolts …)
Unfortunately the manual does not delve into the transaxle so
as you inform parts may be an issue.I am considering buying a second hand one and fitting and sorting
this out at leisure..
Not being a mower engineer it may be wise for me to buy another
second hand working transaxle ?May 25, 2020 at 4:36 pm #34480
vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks yes i have the manual … heriatge hayter code 130s
Transaxle:
Yes it is a spicer.
pic attached(It looks simple to get off the transaxle….. the issue i fear is what
on earth is wrong with it and how would one know looking at all the cogs that will be there.?Do you guys think it is as a item within the transaxle ?
I could find another and then look at mine at leisure (with your help ……..)
(The mower is more to me than a mower you see but now a family friend) -
