Hi all. Newbie hoping to pick brains. I have a Howard Gem with the 810cc 360 engine. It has what I believe to be an Amal 348/10 carburetor. Problem is I seem to have the only one ever made. I have finished the internet looking for eithwr a replacement or a rebuild kit but cannot find any reference to this particular carb. My uncle has had a tinker and has suggested getting new jets but cannot find anything anywhere. Would anyone either have a link or suggestions on a replacement carb that will fit maybe.
TIA

Andy.

June 22, 2024 at 7:30 pm #42469andyfrostParticipantIf it was running fine , then highly unlikely you will need carb parts , yes parts are hard to find , but if you look after your machine , it should see your lifetime out……they’re that well built.

June 22, 2024 at 7:50 pm #42470scudv6ParticipantI have emailed that company, thanks.
I am going to do a compression test as it is spitting back through the air filter a bit which would say to me either a bent inlet valve or one that is not seating properly. My uncle used to work on garden machinary so is quite sorted when it comes to older engines. He suggested the replacing the carb jets etc as it only likes running on choke, obviously that is easier said than done due to getting parts..
You are right though. I love my gem and would use this any day over a newer machine. That said it isn’t getting my allotment turned over so cant wait to get it back running as it should.
June 22, 2024 at 10:09 pm #42471andyfrostParticipantI’m confused now , it’s gone from “running fine” , to spitting back. Firstly get your carb ultrasonically cleaned , and go from there.

We collected it a few weeks back and obviously any fuel etc had gone stale. we cleaned the carb out and flushed the tank and it ran fine. We returned a couple of days later to run it up and then take to the allotment and it was running but the hunting almost with the governor controlling the revs a lot which it never used to. Now it only wants to run on choke and spits back every now and then through the air filter. I have a compression tester coming this afternoon so will try test and report back. also like I said it won’t hurt overhauling the carb either to rule it out.

June 25, 2024 at 5:01 pm #42485scudv6ParticipantRight story so far….
Did a compression test and had no compression on 1 cylinder. I have had the head off and reground all valves in as 1 was looking like it wasn’t seating properly. I now have compression on both cylinders. I haven’t tried to run it yet as all the exhaust/inlet gaskets have fell to bits and was letting exhast and inlet mix.
Would anyone know where to get inlet gaskets from and possibly the 1 between manifold and silencer?
I will also be sending my carb off to have some magic worked on it at Villiersparts. Thanks for the lead Andy.
