ParticipantPersonally I am very doubtful that a backhoe was ever originally available, I heard many rumours of the existence of a version but have never seen any documented proof.
The only version I ever located prior to Jonathan’s build was a poor fitting of a mini digger arm grafted onto an MG6 and trying to be passed off as original. The Japanese id marks gave it away.

I have managed to change my hotel and will still be attending with spares and other Ransomes bits.
Anybody wanting me to take specific items should let me know in advance to ensure I am taking it.

ParticipantLars,
Excellent work and looking good.
The pipe from the tank to the fuel pump was originally copper. The end at the tank would be direct fit to the in tank filter via an angled connector and the fuel pump end would have been fitted with a banjo connector soldered to the pipe.
The pipe from the pump to the carburettor would be flexible.
I can probably supply all the parts you require but would like a photograph of the pump and carburettor connections to be certain.
Please send me an email njarrett@btinternet.com

ParticipantCongratulations on your purchase.
I am recognised as the supplier of parts for the Ransomes crawlers and would initially make the following observations.
The carburettor is not original for an MG5 but from a later MG6. Some consider this a better carburettor Amal 356/1.
The engine appears original MG5 as the fuel pump has the low mount but the oil filler cap is a different design to the gearbox and petrol tank filler caps which suggests there has been a change at some point.
Best to identify the engine by thread type. MG5 would be BSF and MG6 would be UNF.
The engine is also fitted with a vapourising box which indicates it was designed to run on TVO but there is no sign of the second tank or change over pipework. The manifold may have been added when the carburettor was changed but the compression should be lower for TVO so head needs checking.
Drop me an email and I will forward a list of available parts.

ParticipantDerek,
I have never seen this done but guess it is entirely possible with some extreme work.
The biggest stumbling blocks are that the rear panel of the MG5 chassis is integral whereas the MG6 is removable although you may be able to leave the back in place and just remove the lift pulley bracket etc. and attach the MG6 plate at the rear.
Second concern is that the MG6 is longer than the MG5 so the PTO shaft will not fit. Not sure on best method to shorten the shaft and retain operational integrity. The outer tube should be easier to shorten along with the control rod.
You will need to relocate the MG5 petrol tank from under the seat to allow mounting of the hydraulic pump set. I doubt there will be sufficient space to fit the MG6 square fuel tank as the machine is shorter.
When completed you will need to be careful as the shorter tractor may have more tendency to tip as you will have less counterbalance from the engine and may need to add a weight to the front bumper.
Good luck with the build.Neil

ParticipantGraeme,
The correct one is iron. I have these available. Alloy ones often fail.

ParticipantGraeme,
Colour Tune is a special spark plug with a viewing window that allows you to view the combustion in the cylinder. I have never used it on this type of engine but can allow you to adjust mixture and view the spark under compression. If you follow the idea from Rhys you will obtain a similar result. If you think the engine lost compression it may be due to bore washing (too much petrol at idle removing the oil from the cylinder wall) Try spraying a little oil in the plug hole and turning the engine over without the plug to re oil the bore.

ParticipantRichard,
The original bands were probably spring steel but these are likely to be expensive to source. I suggest using stainless steel as this will have minimal stretch under load and more than serviceable for show and light use.

ParticipantSteve,
There are suppliers of the oils available but you must ensure you use a straight oil and not a modern multi-grade as these contain detergents to keep dirt in suspension for the filter to take out. The drayton engine only has a strainer filter so will not capture this dirt and can cause damage to bearings etc.Neil
