Ive noticed this 700 has a different configuration to the one i have , it looks like the tank was re designed due to the vibration issues breaking the fixings where the tank used to connect to the head . I do know these used to break due to vibration , so did howard re design the tank or has some clever clogs modified this tank themselves ?

I tried using the carb from my mk1 clifford rotavator, but it still doesn’t rev properly. I also tried putting the machine under load; it’s like it gets quite close to going into that purring mode, but not quite. It does cut the brambles ok, but just doesn’t quite sound right.
I also looked at the govenor, but that seems to be fine. Would the points gap affect the revs? Does anyone know what the points gap should be? Any other ideas as to what the problem could be would be appreciated.

Thought they looked different. Mine (the one in my profile picture) has a Douglas engine and looks similar to the jap one.
    Thanks for the info.

I don’t know if the pictures are of the same trusty as I know my Grandad had at least two. What I do remember is that it was always a pain to get started!
At least one of them ended up in Africa.

Been in touch with Meetens as Charlie suggested.
Apparently it is quite a problem on the JAP 600, so much so that they’ve run out of replacement valves!
Beginning to look like a custom valve might be the way forward.

Many thanks to the people who have taken the time to comment.
We think we’ve found it’s running problem tonight, the needle that goes up and down when you use the throttle lever was loose as it has come out of its fixing clip. The needle has 3 grooves in it, I plumbed for the middle one, but it needs to be in the top one as it won’t go to tick over even with the tick over screw backed off & now the mixture screw works. So hopefully a bit more tinkering and she’ll run like a goodun.
The only thing now is can anybody tell us about the peg in the wheels ?

    Many Thanks, Ian and Anthony.

Does anybody know how to adjust the gap between the ignition coil and the flywheel on this machine? The ignition coil is located at the inside of the flywheel.

    Just to update.
I took the carb off one more time to thoroughly check everything again and all seems well. Unfortunately, when re-connecting the copper petrol pipe I managed to strip the thread where it connects onto the carb.
I also changed the spark plug (used the once from my mk 1 clifford – has same engine as the allen scythe) and it seemed to run and rev much better despite petrol leaking out of the stripped thread!

So this brings up a few questions.
    1. could a wrong or ‘bad’ spark plug stop the engine from revving properly?
    2. What spark plug should be used in an Allen scythe – the one that it came with had k-17 on it, but the ground electrode looked very worn and thin.
    3. What is the ‘fix’ for a stripped thread in the carburetor?

    Many thanks
