vhgmcbuddyMemberThank you so much fort your advice, I really appreciate it! Have made a start today and will keep you posted on progress!
On a separate note – a rather bizzar question but when working these machines, what tools or favourite spanners did you keep in a tool box for running repairs?
Thanks a million! Nick

vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks Charlie I appreciate your response. I’ve replaced all the cabling with new cabling where possible. I’ve ran a strimmer and other items off the same circuit and have no problems. Borrowed a lawnmower from the mother in law and no issues. The basic design looks simple enough. a Microswitch to start/stop, this runs to a capacitor in the motor and finally into the motor via Carbon brushes (I think that’s the route) so I can bypass the Micro, leaving the rest. I suppose the windings in the motor could have deteriorated with age. I would have just like to have isolated the problem. I can replace any of these items if they are still available, however it may be more cost effective to replace the machine. I understand this however I was just trying to see if I could breathe more live into the auld yin. PS No I’m not sure where I’d find a circuit diagram…I have cleaned where I can access, even separated the motor and don’t see anything obvious.. thanks again any further help from anyone appreciated…

vhgmcbuddyMemberCharlie, my thinking as well. It was bought here in the US as a new machine, so perhaps that is the case.
Anyone know where to look for the SN of the tiller chassis? It seems, by the description of the different phases, that it is a later series V model, and should have the Howard twin or Kohler 301 engine.May 21, 2018 at 10:11 pm #28541
vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks, it has a jap engine so does this mean it’s an early one?

vhgmcbuddyMemberSo…. Ive removed the side cover, and what did I find? Four balls missing out of the bearing at the starter crank end of the jacksahft. And some deep impressions in the bull gear idler gear. Ouch! These are some tough gears. Next step will be to remove the axle shaft assembly and see what’s behind it, lying on the bottom of the case.
Anyone know where best to go for gaskets and parts as needed?May 20, 2018 at 5:42 pm #28515
vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks. I’ll try to take a phot of where the wire comes out of the engine and see if I can find a serial number on the engine itself.

vhgmcbuddyMemberWow, thanks loads, Peter! Just getting started and only done some preliminary research for help books. This is great.

vhgmcbuddyMemberCharlie I owe you an apology. Finally got a few minutes to look closer at “the Machine”. What look like splines or keyways are merely rather evenly spaced flashing flaws from the casting process, Im guessing. Sorry about the confusion, but I am new to this type of old design and structure.
thanks again for your interest.

vhgmcbuddyMemberCharlie, thanks for the response. The wheel drive flange has what look like 8 approx 1/4″ splines in it that match to the same on the “shaft”. I see a much smaller dia piece inside of that too, but since the wheels turn independent of each other when in neutral, I thought perhaps they are driven individually as well. This brings me to my next question……what is the fastener type on these machines? Metric? Wentworth? or another? The wheel studs seem to measure just under 13mm and I believe 2.00 pitch. I need to determine this to get longer studs to use with a T-bar puller.
Cheers!

vhgmcbuddyMemberHello, my first post here and also looking for the manuals for the f80 as I need to make some adjustments and the manuals would be very helpful if possible. My email is Brickley.vincent@gmail.com

vhgmcbuddyMemberHi, yes all of the cylinders stop at the same time, speed up at the same time. I think it may be the mower engagement or clutch arrangement but no idea if this is hard to change or where I would go to get spares.
As you sit on the mower on the right the drive pulley that operates the cutters engages smoothly but keeps speeding up and slowing down and stopping even on a perfectly cut pitch which led me to think it may be the mower drive / engage clutch that is at fault.
Thanks fore the top tip though, much appreciated. First job I have done is to fit a little inkeeping tool box on the back as I completly understand what you say about adjustment!

vhgmcbuddyMemberTo all those who are exhibiting horticultural equipment
Just to let you know that unfortunately due to the type of ground on site we will not be having a working area anymore. On the plus side you can relax. Many thanks for your support -
