Many thanks, I was unsure if the curve was some kind of preload, a little like scissor blades. I can now see the bend is just outboard of the three attachment bolts. Straightened out OK with a little ‘manual engineering’. Getting everything cleaned up now, cutter blades a little corroded but seem to have had little wear and sharpen up OK.
    Thanks again.

Thanks for you reply Jeremy. I have brought a 630 split link (yet to be delivered) based on the measurements I made with a digital calliper. However only 2 of the three measurement seemed to tie up exactly to what’s available, thus my enquiry. I have had motorbikes for 30+ years (most chain drive) so I am used to the various pitch measurement. I hope what I brought fits. Most chain measurement are imperial even nowadays.

I’ve got the transmission loose so I guess the shaft must be corroded in the trans pulley. Will try some extreme force… Thanks

If you search Google( Kholer plastic fuel pump) you will see a few questions and answers. I don’t need at the moment. But for that price, think I would take a chance. Sorry bit late only now seen your topic. Owen.

Hillsider – thank you for the information re ‘peg spanner’, I will certainly follow that one up. Using the stilsons I tried both left and right hand thread options, currently all to no avail. I shall saturate the area even more with WD40 and have another go during next week. Watch this space as they say.

Isn’t getting older grand. I used to do trials and challenge events with my Land Rovers. Chucking wheels about in the middle of nowhere was no problem. Now I carry an ex-military short spade in my Disco. Just the job to slide under a wheel and lever it into place.
Just a point to bear in mind if using a Hi Lift/Farm jack. They can easily slip and can give you a nasty bang. Never leave anything just supported with one.
I’m not surprised you can’t find things, Jonathan. You’ve to many garages and storage places.

I was stronger fifty years as well Plonker. Last week I picked up the strimmer to get it starter for the coming season, I’m sure it’s put on wight over winter. I got a Rand Rover bottle jack at a sale, few years ago. Most useful, It’s only 5. 1/2 inches high when closed and with the aid of a screw up part it extends to just over a foot. been used for anything it will go under from a W H to a Same Minitaurus 60 my latest project. I don’t rely on the bottle jack only, always use axle stands were theirs a chance of getting trapped. That’s one thing with getting older we should get wiser. I was told by a mate the jack is Land Rover. The jack is a Coram 3.5 ton. Owen.

Wow, good stuff, but excuse me for not checking all the maths.
I do like these sort of technical details, you never know when it might come in handy.

had a dig thru my docs, i thought i had a specs sheet for the Gem maggy somewhere,
but not to be found. maybe it is a download file, not paper.

did find this, a ‘2 in 1’ JAP book,
it has same 38 degree instructions as seen, and also
with glued in insert with 1 / 4 inch instructions.

it seems to me a critical instruction has been missed when reading the 38 degrees setup,
being the details which relate to “the fully advanced position”.

I take this to mean that this is how the maggy is installed for proper setup of the fully advanced position for when it is running at full governed speed rpm.
it would help if the book actually stated that…

the impulse mechanism then retards the maggy for starting.
again the book does not explain that, at least not on that page.

the quarter inch BTDC method is the opposite method,
how to install maggy from the startup spark position,
which is the usual method for installing ignition systems by
startup timing a motor which has an automatic advance system.

the specific instructions for each method are quite different,
and must not be mixed up.

attached is picture of insert instructions,
and link to book cover with page 12 and page 12 insert,
also link to Wico specs sheet for maggy for the Howard Terrier engine,
    the Howard Model L.
a similar type of maggy, but with different operating specs,
so only use to help understand how it works,
do not assume those specs work for the Gem maggy.

notice to anybody who finds this post looking for Howard L info,
the 30 degrees BTDC is for early models with angled spark plug head,
later models with vertical centered spark plug need less advance,
make sure you have the right specs for your motor.
if rebuilding from boxes of parts, make sure you have
the correct maggy for you motor,
many look the same but have different specs.

keep at it, eventually it will get sorted correctly,
and the motor will sound that much sweeter from all
the effort it took to get it right. Rod.

I have a Farm Jack in the land Rover, but I think I will get a Bottle jack, I am not happy with this getting old business, although I still have the body of a Greek God, I am losing my strength(compared with fifty years ago) I may end up collecting hand held sprayers! They will be the only things I will be able to pick up.

It was a good show and worth the 3hr or so drive. Unfortunately my camera decided to go on strike, so no photo’s.
Good to meet up with friends and make new ones. Hopefully I’ll be back next year.
