hi just to let you all know that Clive Gravett who runs the Budding Foundation mower museum has purchased the suffolk so it will now go on display for people to admire and not used and lost forever thanks to every one for their input and at least it is a happy ending.

A Follower of this site in Ireland, who is not a member, Richard Duffy, Points out that the change of plug cap probably meant that there was a Resister in the other cap, and that a resister must never be used in a Magneto ignition system, also that the plug gap for use with a magneto should not be more than 18-20 Thou. as any more can lead to the spark jumping the safety gap in the Magneto, also to use only Copper core cable for the ignition. sound sensible advise to me.

Excellent, just out of interest, what machines do you have the receipts for? What machines are they, how much were they, what year was that?
My uncle seems to recall the story of our ransomes being £135 in either 1937 or 47, still haven’t properly identified it.

Well, YouTube has failed me (brings up blackhead and cyst removal ! )

Any links to manuals or step by step guides. Not found anything myself so far.

well, The correct bearing is available from a company in the UK at £88.00 + VAT! also found it in the States for $66.00 plus P+P so probably works about the same, It is actally the spindle with the bearing all as one integral unit, so, I got Two 16mm X 27mm ball bearings and an “oilite” bronze bush that I turned down to fit in the middle of the two ball bearings to take up the space, I made a sleeve to take up the slack in the casting as you suggested, and BINGO ! It Works fine, and did not overheat, all done for less than £15.00.

Thank you expeatfarmer and Neil, any idea roughly when they changed the running gear, just for future reference.
So maybe my serial number is 2523, that would be somewhere about right.
Has anyone tried macro etching or using dye penetrant to enhance a serial number? Both techniques are non invasive so wont affect anything, i just happen to habe got some more cans today for checking a casting i had in at work.

Charlie who has commented in this thread?
Where abouts are you Joe, i intend to bare tub my mg2 when i have eatablished the true identity and would appreciate seeing one stripped out if that would be alright with you?

Someone else struggling with establishing the true identity of an mg2.
From what i can make out from a fairly well corroded back plate is that my machine is number 1573, dating it to 1944/45 but my crown wheels are stamped 1/47 as in january 1947, my grandfather bought the crawler circa 1968 always said it was a 1937 and the engine number appears to have evaporated into the ether of time.
Was there a mass mg2 ringing operation going on in the past?
Sorry to hijack your thread a bit but has anyone ever gone to reading uni and dug through the sales archives?
