I believe the Mayfield with a rotavator is the Wentworth, not many made and not a great success so I have been told.

Have you tried the archives at Museum of English Rural Life?

George is not listed as he is no longer a club member. Only registers run by club members are listed.

Sounds as if gears are tightly meshed somewhere. Is it notchy in neutral or in any particular or all gears? Could it be drive to rotors causing problem?

Steve it sounds as if the ‘Lincolnshire way’ is the way forward as it includes every possible machine. The antique rule would possibly be a problem for the horse class too, not many 100 year old horses around.

I believe the date of 1960 is set by the Society of Ploughmen, if so there is not much the club can do regarding the national horticultural vintage class. It is only the vintage ploughing classes that this date applies to, (chap will correct me if I am wrong). All other club activities take no account of age.

The Barford Atom is a good simple machine, only problem I find is the lack of reverse gear can make it difficult to get out of a corner. As you say £400 sounds to much, £75-£150 I would say is more reasonable. A non runner could cost about £75-£100 for a new coil, points and condenser.

Does the ‘notchiness’ feel like it is as each tooth of a gear engages. Does it feel notchy without the engine attached?

The cut off date is used to classify ‘vintage’ for ploughing classes. Generally newer items are termed ‘classic’. This has been the subject of debate previously, with no definitive answer. If your question relates to ploughing it might be worth contact the Society of Ploughmen.

Whatever additive you use make sure it is safe for the type of metal that is being cleaned. Some will eat aluminium!!!!

Ben welcome to the forum. I have a similar age Howard with the BJ engine and broken reverse gear. The early reverse gear machines had a serious fault where reverse could be engaged while still in forward gear, this results in stripped gears. My machine only has 2nd and 3rd gear as 1st is damaged.
