ParticipantPeter , very interesting , my Father was a Market gardener , and attended that very market with “Harry” Fisk , along with countless others in our area. It was a hard way to earn a crust , but somehow they all managed.
Father attended both markets , firstly the one where the Castle Mall is now built , he started off going with Grandfather , which involved a 3am start with the horse and cart , the Horse would be tied up at the Old Lamb Yard , along with many others.
Eventually , after Grandfathers passing , he got more mechanised , and purchased a Morris Commercial lorry(and you reckon your Commer is slow) , even with that , it still meant getting to Market at around 4am.
On the closing of the old market , they all moved To Harford bridges , there always appeared great comradeship amongst the all.
Happy , but VERY hard days.Andy.

ParticipantA warm welcome Gareth , I’m sure some of the Howard lads will read this and reply , seconhand carbs often appear on the well known auction site , so all is far from lost.
Good luck with your project.Andy.

ParticipantJon , the problem you will face is that the JAP engine does not have a crankshaft “poking out at the front” the end is enclosed internally. Whether a dynastart is both strong and powerful enough to be connected via the cranking stub I’m not so sure , perhaps folk more experience with these form of starters would know.

ParticipantJon , you haven’t told us what engine you have on your Gem , if it’s a Kohler it would be relatively straightforward , as has been suggested using a dynastart and removing the recoil system.
IF however you have a Jap or BJ engine , it would be an understatement to say it is more difficult.
Out of curiosity why do you think you need electric start ??.Andy.

ParticipantPeter , no I haven’t seen an A5 with a single cap. I looked at (and nearly bought) a 56A , which had two seperate tanks , it all looked original to me , and I’ve since seen one other.
Is there any info on these being supplied in Petrol/Parrafin guise.Andy.

ParticipantPeter , I see you have two fillers on the tank , is this a Petrol/parrafin model , I know of a couple of PP 56aS , but as yet not a PP A5.

ParticipantDave , as ever really looking forward to a great weekend. Rooms at Premier Inn all booked up…………camping out has somehow lost its appeal with me.

ParticipantSounds just fine to me Peter , a correctly set “stroker” should fourstroke when not under load , give it some work and as Neil said in the song “what a beautiful noise”.

ParticipantIt works on an “over centre ” principal , it sounds to me that it needs simple adjustment. I assume you have checked that it is actually disengaging , the cones had a habit of sticking together if they had been standing unused for long periods.

ParticipantBy your above post , it would suggest a blockage , have it cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.

ParticipantDave , surprisingly a vast number of spares for JLO are still available from Germany , so all may not be lost.
I’m at present working on a Sachs , and so far have managed to source all parts I needed.Andy.

ParticipantIf your machine has stood for a long time rust may well have formed on the pulleys ,hence the “grabbing” you can either clean them by hand , or 20mins working it the machine should put things right.
This of course is assuming you have the correct belt fitted.Andy.
