Grahame , any flywheel from a 24c/25c/26c should be OK , there are minor differences , such as fixed/detachable cooling fan , starter pulley mounting etc., original Allen scythes had the mechanical centifugal governor cam , but they will run perfectly well without it , Howard bantams , the smaller Cliffords to name but two.

Firstly a warm welcome , Bantams are my favourite small Howard , and I use them alot for potato and rowcrop work. Infact I’m now in the process of working on yet another one , which I’m building from the heap of broken/spares machines that I’ve accumulated over the years.
Look forward to hearing of your progress.

Hello everyone,I am a new member and thought it time to introduce myself.
My name is T.MAX and I have worked on a few lawnmowers and rotavators for people on our allotments, nothing of major engineering mainly carburetors and converting old Briggs and Stratton ignition coils to super magnatron.I was looking for a project a bit more challenging and thought about joining a club ,hey presto found this site and imediatley thought thats for me,so here I am,also at the same time I was searching ebay for a machine to perhaps renovate.I settled on a Howard Bantam with Villiers mark 15 fourstroke.
All the advert said was engine turned freely and been stored for some time.Well rotavator is here now ,delivered to door and so the job begins.
Engine plate states 460A 4265 so from some of what Ive read before I think its a 1965 built engine which is about the time of the last bantams before Howards updated it to the new Howard 200 if anyone knows different or more to add I would love to hear.
OK so machine looks all here nothing obvious missing, wheels free wheel, rotors free wheel, control rods engage ,remove rocker cover and things work up and down nicely.Apart from muck and oil everything looks good so far.
I hope you enjoy the read so far more to follow as I progress.

    Can anyone help?
I have acquired a Howard Bantam Rotovator from I think the early 1950’s. It is fitted with Howards 120cc AC engine.
I have eventually got this running, however it is throwing out oil via the breather tube. I filled it with 1 1/2 pints based ion the amount used in the BSA 120cc engine, as that’s the only manual I could find.
Can anyone advise of the correct oil amount required, or offer any other words of advice?
    Many thanks
    Glenn

Remember the first MK15s fitted to the Howard Bantam had the V508C carb fitted(later replaced by the S12) , so the carb you have is the correct type and fitment. Fortunately it is a very common carb , so spares are readily available.

I recently picked up a howard bullfinch that had been taken to pieces. Its very rough and bits are missing but i was interested in a couple of implements that id like to know if are original howard parts. Also im wondering if any bullfinch parts were the same on the bantam and demon rotovators. im particularily intersted in the cultivator but would like to hear others thoughts

The Howard Bantam had several different engines over the years. Early models had a Villiers Mk25c, later a Howard AC engine was fitted. Other engines included BSA, Villiers 4 stroke B&S etc.
A photograph of the engine on your machine will help identify it. A 2 stroke can usually be identified by the lack of any means of adding oil to the sump (crankcase) as petrol 2 strokes rely on the oil in the fuel mixture for lubrication.

    Hi All
I have just acquired a very old and very tatty little Howard Bantam,it seems all there but extremely rusty, just one question really it looks like it has a 2 stroke Villiers engine with the carburettor and exhaust on opposite sides of the cylinder head, we’re these engines fitted a standard or is it a 4 stroke in a different layout

    Hi Forum,
I have been a keen gardener for a while and have just become the proud owner of my Howard Bantam Rotavator. She needs a little TLC so I’m looking to source some piston rings to try and get her running. I am also really keen to know how old my rotavator is and what it actually says on the plaque. I’ve attached a few photos. Can anyone help?
    Thanks Charlotte

From my research, the Oxford Allen had the option of a plough attachment which would meet my needs. Problem is I have never seen one for sale, they seem to be pretty rare.

I have not been able to find out much on the Howards, other than what you say that the Bantam had a Scythe attachment. So it looks like the 350 or any of the bigger models didn’t. I also heard that the Bantam engine was not so good.

I don’t think the Allen Scythe ever had a rotavator attachment. Not sure if the Howard 350 had scythe attachment. Howard Bantam did.

    Hi
I’m rather new to this forum and to horticultural machinery but thought this was the best place to ask for some help!
I’ve recently bought a 2 stroke Villers engine Howard Bantam, upon getting it home I’ve not been able to get it started. It turns over with the pull cord, there’s fuel in there although some is leaking from the carburettor primer. I’ve not yet tested the spark plug, but I don’t suppose anyone has any other suggestions as to what it might be?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might have!
