vhgmcbuddyMemberInteresting Peter!! Your manual is the same layout as the one supplied to me by Charlie, but lists different oils. Have attached the page from Charlie’s manual for comparison.
Charlie, do you know what year your operators manual is from?
Looking on the Simar website, the US version of the manual, dated 1950, states SAE140, with SAE90 being an option for cold weather use. The French manual does not give an SAE value, but does give Castrol Swanshot (as stated in your manual) and Shell Dentax as possible gearbox oils. Confusingly, Shell Dentax is still available in both SAE90 and SAE140 grade!!!
Looks like I am going to have to spend even more money on the Simar and buy some new oil!!

vhgmcbuddyMemberGreat photos, thank you Alan! I wonder if I could buy one at that price – nearly £5. I could certainly save up for that!

vhgmcbuddyMemberNice one Peter. It’s even got side shields!!
On the subject of oil for the gearbox, you now have me very worried as I have been using non EP SAE90 on my Simar 56 rebuild. The Simar 35/56 operators manual states Castrol ST or SAE90 for the gearbox. Is this incorrect??

vhgmcbuddyMemberI have one of these, not common in Australia – too slow in 400 acre paddocks! The missing bit in your photo is a piece of round wood, dowel, I would call it. There is also a long thin leather strip, not unlike a boot lace that is secured to each handle, and wraps around the drive shaft. Would you like more info, dimensions etc, music sheets?!

vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks Neil,
I’ll try a new plug first. I’ll send you an email regarding the coil.
Cheers!

vhgmcbuddyMemberVery interesting trusty, my first and only guess was really wide of the mark. That’s two to you now, you’ll have to try for three in a row.

vhgmcbuddyMemberI no I’ve had colourcharts against the red that’s left and none seem to match. It’s kinda gone a faded pink colour, I did think that massey furgie red would be near enough. It’s a hard decision
