Hi , just been reading the posts and thought I’d give a lookon the www using term seed catalogue ES50 as a reference and happened upon a company called Elsom Seeds Ltd, based in Spalding Lincolnshire.
A look at their website and in particular their about us page suggests that they commenced business in 1844.
Might be worth you contacting them just in case they happen to have anything to do with your tag?

Hi both,
Thanks for your replies.

My first thought was that Shardy appeared as a typographical error, the book that has the reference was produced some time ago,1982 to be precise, and it occurred to me that the letter n when written at speed in notes, could perhaps be misinterpreted later as an r. Thought here was that perhaps any initial notes might have been written down rather than in electronic form, also no www then, to double check!

However it was useful to ask the question and thank you will-haggle for the image of the seed Barrow.

I am down that way this coming weekend, south Cerney tbp, so if I remember I might have conversations on the matter with other like minded folk too.

Hi Charlie, thanks for the info, I have just renewed membership through the website, so much easier quicker and most importantly cheaper than postage these days.

At risk of poking a sleeping lion with a short stick, (thinking of what happened to Albert Ramsbottom with Wallace at this point), does make one wonder about whether putting the The Cultivator on line for those of us who are on line these days could be a way of reducing costs for the club in these times of spiralling prices.

Granted there are a number who are not on line, so for some time printed material would still be required, however a number of organisations of which I am a member have gone exclusively on-line with their newsletters etc, with little diminution in membership numbers.

Something for pondering over a glass or two of something perhaps.

Trust you are able to have a relaxing Christmas.

Just downloaded the 4 volume set for off line reference, thanks for publishing it.

One of the websites you mention in the Why PDF format section that disappeared during the course of your research was mine (it focussed on those sprayers made in and around Birmingham) and although I had intended to put it back on again at some point, I now see no need, as you have pretty much covered it but with far more detail than I would have thought to show or had access to, so thankyou again.

Just refuelled van following trip to South Cerney last weekend, majority motorway driving, as happened to be going past preferred fuel station. Filled to first pump cutout as normally do then worked out mpg. Those of you there saw how much sprayer stuff, not to mention the domestic kit, was in van and caravan was being towed too, albeit lucky enough to have a lightweight one c700kg.
For a March 2007 diesel transit connect tourneo high roof, with 140k on the clock think 39mpg is pretty decent return.

To say surprised is an understatement!

Always considered this van as a keeper, this trip confirms it.

I too have telephoned businesses and schools about their apparent distress signals and they generally have no idea why they are receiving a call.

This was the first time we attended South Cerney and it was well worth attending, the range of exhibits on the Club stand was wide, never mind the rest of the show, and it was great to see folk again, most of whom we hadn’t seen since BC, and to meet new ones too.

The site is large and mainly flat, the weather was typical Britain, but hey we have to have the wet to have our Green and Pleasant Land don’t we.
Really didn’t want to come away from those views, ( live in a valley at home) but said to Andrew to book us in again for next year, ticking off the days already.

Mrs Sprayerman really enjoyed her time wandering around the stalls etc

It has been an exceptional year and though I am sort of reluctant to suggest it, I think most of next year could be the same.

I remember the Constable Savage sketch, oddly think about that sketch quite often!!

In December 2018 my former employer made me redundant and so I set my own small business at the start of 2019 and as this was working outside, I was able to carry on working through the first and subsequent lockdowns and hopefully will be able to carry on during the one that is now looming. As my employment was office based, the floor had 70 or so folk on it, now so grateful that they did let me go as working outside so much better all round.

We have both missed going to various shows and events, the Mrs more than me, as I have been able to get out a bit more than her, through work I cannot do from home, but know that when things start up again we won’t be seeing some friends again as Covid has taken them.

In the road we live on someone set up a WhatsApp group so neighbours could talk during lockdown, this has been really useful, we now know far more of our neighbours than we did before and with charity shops being closed numerous unwanted items have been recycled in the street, tools lent or borrowed etc, or simply socially distanced help, information and moral support.

Like Joe above the garden has seen far more attention than in previous years and is even more attractive to look at even now at the end of the year.

I think we will come out of it stronger but it’s likely to take a while but like Britain was after WW2, the new normal won’t be quite the same as before.

Good evening Mr Wallingfield,

We are both good thanks and gardening is great, enough to keep the wolves where they belong, though Mother Nature is intervening rather more at present, but that’s just a seasonal occupational hazard!

As a consequence am doing a bit of occasional painting and re-decorating, no paper hanging though, which enables work inside heated properties when it’s lashing down outside, can’t wait to get outside again though.

Her ladyship missed going to the Autumn show for the shopping but let’s just get through the current situation and maybe the show will happen again sometime.

Hope things are good with you all and that you’re keeping safe.

Yes, the sprayer with the green tank, that was the top of the conglomeration of sprayers with the Knapsack sprayer and Sheen flame gun was an Eclipse Warley, there was a Mysto small tall hand held pneumatic on one of the benches too. One of the items against the wall next to the entry door was large and black and has a couple of round dials on the main face – there was never a close-up shot of it but I think it had a movable arm across the centre – think it might have been a sort of clocking in clock. I know after the program finished, we had it recorded, we went back to his workshop having a look at things – funny thing is looked like a garage I know – and no I don’t think any are missing.

A kids programme – of course it was but only for kids from 2 to 92…..

This was the Dronwal pattern number No.1595. It should stand 31 inches high and had either a red or green enamelled Heavy Malleable iron base, 7+1/2 inches X 7+1/2 inches. It would originally have had connections for 1/2,5/8 or 3/4″ hose. 1968 would have seen you paying 59s 6d for it, straight conversion is £2.95 in new money then – if one allows for RPI between now and 2013 and if they were still being made then £44.00 would potentially be what it could cost.
