ParticipantHello Barryg
I think your best bet is to replace the coil as recommended, the difference can be remarkable, even with a coil that is apparently working.
I would try John Cruse first at ‘the mower centre’ Vicarage Road, Hailsham, East Sussex first, he is a club member who has vast stocks of our sort of spares, and he has helped me with odd coils over the years. I usually post him the old mag and he tests everything and will return it with any replacements needed, fixed and ready to fit.
He is on 01323 842477 weekdays only/not evenings.
Here is a picture of my 700 with Hirth diesel taken a few years ago, when we had a club display at RHS gardens at Wisley. ( could be time for another display at Wisley Mr Chairman !!

ParticipantHello Ben.
I painted my Mk 1 Clifford with – Corrofast coatings, David Brown Red Gloss D508081D
It was a pretty close match I would call it a dark Ruby colour,Another close match in aerosol is ‘rustoleum’ ‘cherry red’ multi purpose aerosol.
I found it a bit on the thin side with not very good coverage. I meant to say the spray tank in the photo is DB ‘Hunting pink’ ( not dark enough)Good luck

ParticipantLooks a ‘proper job’ Charlie, is the central heating installed yet? I was releived to see that the washing line has survived ‘ ordeal by shed builder’.
I bet you can’t wait for the boys to vacate your garage !December 9, 2016 at 9:46 pm #23515hortiman
ParticipantApart from the mentioned engine problems, the rest of the machine appears to be in excellent original condition, and fitted with the wider rotavator unit, which is not so common. Good luck with it. The 28B engine can be a bit ‘fussy’ if not tuned and timed correctly, the carb is prone air leaks which cause backfiring and spitting back through the carb. An excellent engine when running correctly with bags of power, but a bit thirsty when working hard. I have spent many hours behind one in work, but prefer the Diesel version, which is not a common machine now.

ParticipantHello again Moggyjim.
I too have had cardioversion, and survived the ordeal!!
My 700 is not so easy to start as it has Hirth D23 diesel engine, but goes like a train when it is running.

ParticipantHi Moggyjim.
Do you need me to send you a clutch cable to copy, or I could send it to John Cruse if you prefer.
I have lugged wheelbands that slip over my rubber tyres, they work a treat! sadly no ploughs now, only the one on my machine.
If you need big wheels to take 6.00×16 tyres Massey 35 front wheels have the same stud pattern, but you will need 2 axle extensions, these were a standard option.Chris

ParticipantHi there moggyjim
John Cruse at the Mower centre, Hailsham, East Sussex (01323 842477) has mad 700 clutch cables for me in the past, not sure if he has a pattern, as I have always sent him an old one to copy. If you have not got a pattern, I may still have one here you can borrow, let me know.
I have a Howard 352 with the jockey pulley system, it works very well. I think the guy with the ‘Howard rotavator spares’ website may still market a centrifugal clutch for the 350, I think he used to sell them.

ParticipantHello there Stephen.
The single cylinder tractor is not a President, but it is a Winget, there are several members of the club with Wingets, I am sure one will contact you soon.

ParticipantHi Geoff.
The Australian oddity, is in fact a Wolverhampton oddity!, It is a John Shaw ‘Governer’ mad in Wolverhampton in the early thirties I think. Watercooled 2 stroke engine fitted to the end of the cutting cylinder, they made other more conventional mowers too.
I know where there is one, or where there was one not sure if it has moved on.Chris

ParticipantDave.
If you read the Club magazine, you will see that we have a Clifford expert, in the helplines section, Paul Coles, who lives in Kent. he has reprints of most manuals, and I am sure he will be able to help.
