ParticipantHaving worked in the motor trade for numerous years, all the garages, including my dads, always used copper grease on nuts bolts in areas prone to moisture, or where different metals meet. Especially on wheel hub assemblies between the hub and alloy wheel. Working on the motorway now, its amazing how many folk are stuck at the side of the road, unable to change a flat, because the alloy wheel has corroded to the hub…… You can tell which cars are maintained from those which seldom see the inside of a workshop.

ParticipantThanks John, its not bad, not perfect! But good enough….. have only filled the battered curved front, left the sides alone.

ParticipantI think I have John, another of your fine resto’s! Will go have a memory refresh, whilst waiting for some paint to dry. Just gave the inside of my grass box a coat or two….

ParticipantThats a good idea! I take it the wood will remain either side of the steel?

ParticipantWere they the same engine as Tecumseh? Didnt they also have problems with conrod failure, if used at low revs for longer periods the dip/splash lubrication wasnt sufficient. They also didnt have any white metal bearing as such, the alloy conrod fitted straight on the crank.

ParticipantYou don’t realise how big an area these grass boxes actually are? After applying filler in 3 stages, 1st application filled the dents, 2nd application replaced the curve and the 3rd application repaired the raised detail and any minor imperfections. Its not as good as new, but I’m reasonably happy with it. Here it is waiting for the 3rd application to harden and then with a wet coat of etch primer.

ParticipantMade a start on the grass box today. It looked reasonably straight, however, running a hand over the surface proved otherwise. So to start with I removed as much paint as possible, then using hammer and dolly set about removing the largest of the dents. Unfortunately I don’t have a shrinking hammer or dolly so had to leave the minor dents as was, these will be smoothed with filler.
