vhgmcbuddyMemberI grew Four different varieties of out door tomatoes in the allotment this year, Crimson Crush and Mountain Magic Lived up to the claim from the seed merchant, they both survived the Blight, that the chap on the next plot had with his Toms. I lost two rows of Italian Toms to blight but the two above were fine, It reminded me just how much flavour there is in Home grown, compared to the shop bought ones, that have no taste at all, Funny what we get used to!

vhgmcbuddyMemberAndy,
Thank you for your response & information. Will post some updates as to how we get on with our attempts at starting this. Yes, looks a fine bit of kit – bit scabby, has been lying around unused for some time I think. Also, sounds like it was skip destined had the Menshed not wanted it. Menshed apparently have a larger “ancient” cultivator for heavier outdoor tasks which I have not seen yet.
Thanks again for info, I have a general interest in mechanical things but limited knowledge.David

vhgmcbuddyMemberWell, barring the wobble with the shims its all back together and runs very well so-far (haven’t given it a proper test yet)
And no smoke!

vhgmcbuddyMemberSuccess!! Fitted a Nova II module and now have sweet running Villiers Mk25.
The only issue I found with the Nova module is that the spark is generated 180 degrees from the original contact breaker. The Mk25 flywheel contains two magnets, one small, one large. The original contact breaker setup had the points opening as the smaller magnet reached the 12 o’clock position. After fitting the Nova module, I set the flywheel in the same position it had been in, which produced a puff of smoke from the carburettor every time I tried to start it. This could only happen if the intake valve was open, so I knew the timing was way out. As the ignition module is triggered by a magnet passing the coil, I guessed that the module was using the larger of the two magnets, so rotated the flywheel 180 degrees. This now produced kickback when trying to start, but at least I knew the spark wasn’t far from where it needed to be. After a couple more attempts, rotating the flywheel a few degrees at a time, I found the sweet spot.
The actual fitting of the module was very simple. There is a stud on the outside face of the armature plate which can be used to connect an engine stop wire. I connected the positive terminal of the module to this stud, as it is wired back to the coil. The negative was connected to one of the mounting studs for the fan cowling. As I had removed the whole contact breaker assembly, is used one of the now redundant mounting holes for bolting the module to the outside of the armature plate. I could have mounted the module directly in place of the contact breaker box, but was worried that it might not have enough ventilation, as they do get hot in use. Thanks for your input chaps.

vhgmcbuddyMemberLooks like a pile of junk
Best to remove the rubbish bits & use the rest for spare parts. Engine would be good for someone

vhgmcbuddyMemberManaged to reverse the Lucas sr1 mag and get a very good spark. The points cam is screwed down onto a taper ..when the the screw is removed the cam can be prised off and moved . I changed the condenser and what a difference it made to the spark. the full instructions are on line in pdf form …lucas workshop instructions SR1 magneto …page 8 cam timing.

vhgmcbuddyMemberMany thanks for the info. It looks like the machine hasn’t travelled far as I’m only 30 miles from Beverley.

vhgmcbuddyMemberI took your advice Charlie and contacted MERL. Unfortunately, they were not able to find any information on my Allen Mayfield scythe. It could be that I have read the serial number wrong, as the plate is badly corroded. If anyone else owns such a machine, could you confirm if the format of my serial number (two letters followed by 4 digits) is likely to be correct?
On the plus side, they dated my Allen scythe to 07/05/1969, being delivered to a Mountain & Sons Ltd.

vhgmcbuddyMemberWell, the guides have arrived and been fitted, a bit of a doddle really, as advised just used a well-fitting punch and very light heating, came right out/went right in..
One thing I didn’t expect was that the guides are a little longer than the valve spring box is high, this meant that I had to give them a little tap with a hammer once they were down as far as I could get them and crack/pull out 3/4s of the guide and then tap through the last little bit. I suppose it wouldn’t be impossible to drive them up through the top of the block – but not easy.
I have also painted the block, cleaned up the gasket surfaces and run a tap down the threads. as I have found on a few engine’s when doing this – some threads, on a component that had obviously not been removed since new – had all kinds of gunk in them and some were clean as a whistle, I have never understood this!
Anyway, I put the bottom end together with new 3 shims on the crankshaft on the flywheel end of the crank – as was the case when I stripped it – but I also put a new thrust bearing on the gearbox side of the crank and when I reassembled the endplate the crank was very tight indeed – so I now need to strip it again to remove some of those shims – ho-hum, such is life..
