Definitely a 977B. What I can’t be certain of is whether this is the original magneto. Hopefully, as Geoff has a manual for the Norton Big 4 industrial version, this will show the correct mag and illustrate how the timing is carried out. I am trying to avoid taking the mag apart as it has only just been rebuilt and is working perfectly, but if no one has any info on the 977B and how (or even if) the timing can be adjusted, this might be my only course of action.

interesting gizmo Geoff.lots of development I am sure. don’t want to pull it to bits,but with the addition of a quick mountable ring for each wheel with say 3 inch spikes protruding it would not get wheel spin on tyres going up hill in moist or high volumes of cut brash areas. very nice all the same.

That is interesting, as there has just been an article in the national press about the record price of Land £11500 per acre, which has more than kept up with inflation over the years, it seems the price for agricultural land is between 3000-11500 per acre, but small plots always sell well particularly in the south, for pony grazing, fetching well over the prices mentioned, I used to live in Bridgnorth Shropshire and forty years ago they reported in the local paper that agricultural land had reached £400.00 per acre! so as they say, they are not making any more of the stuff, a cast iron investment I would have thought.

For more info, from left to right
a model C 1970 2 wheels 8 speeds with the exclusive rotary plow (7.6 hp)
a model D 1937 1 wheel the one which was built in England for 20 years (3hp)
a model L 1946 2 wheels 4 speeds with the reel mower 7.6hp
a model Pro 7000 2wheels with the famous bushhog 10hp

The first three has Gravely Engine and the last a Kawasaki engine

Thanks for the ref to Shepton Mallet next week.
This old girl is not seized but needs rebuild. V appreciative of any clues re. spares, manual etc.
No idea why it is green.
Another modification is the drive wheels; the frame has been cut and widened, wheel spacers fixed to drums and wheel dishes reversed.
Previous owner says it was to enable wider rows to be cultivated.
There is no spec plate to be seen anywhere. Can anyone guess its age?

If you have a look at my Norton Engined Trusty project on the old forum (https://www.tractorbox.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6279), you will see I had my clutch shoes relined by Saftek of Cleckheaton (www.saftek.co.uk), for about £30.
I also replaced the rubber bushes, which were supplied by Robush (www.robush.co.uk), there part number being RB3752. They cost me £6.20 each exc VAT, but the carriage was an eye watering £12.15 exc VAT!! They were a perfect match for the originals though.
The dimensions of mine were 3/8″ ID, 13/16″ OD, 3/4″ outside length and 7/8″ inside length.

The grass box for this and the 28 inch Atco will be resprayed when I get the garden shed cleared which will not be long now as the new overflow is due shortly

Thank you for all the help,I have had a play with it and can get it to cough, so of to have bit more of a play,don’t want to change the engine as it is original and in nice condition, will try post pictures later,

Do any of you use lead replacement products like redex? As am I right in thinking these engine would of been made for four star fuel?
