ParticipantThe next problem is the oil suction filter located in the sump.
It has been damaged in the past.
I may be able to solder up the tear, but it is a bit distorted.
A replacement will have to be fabricated.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of a small quantity of Brass mesh?October 11, 2015 at 10:54 am #14820silverfoxfintry
ParticipantThe big end journal mikes at 1.865/1.864″.
Is this the standard size or a regrind ?
As for the exhaust port—- I may have to bore it out and sleeve it back to the original size.
It’s quite badly eroded.

ParticipantThe engine is cleaned and stripped.
Not in bad condition.
The big end bearing journal is in good condition, but I will replace the shells and the main bearing.
The valves require re-seating but are usable.
The timing chain is a bit stretched and I will replace it.
The main problem is the exhaust port.
How is the exhaust pipe fitted to the cylinder
All I have is a rusted hole in the cylinder and 2 tapped holes.
Is something missing?
Does anyone have a picture of this area?

ParticipantOK. The engine is out and in my workshop.
The clutch and flywheel are removed as is the magneto, carbureter and fuel pump.
Fount that the magneto had been repaired in the past. It may require a replacement cap.
It’s still far to heavy for me to lift.
The engine number is MGE 3828.September 30, 2015 at 3:55 pm #14694silverfoxfintry
ParticipantI will repair/weld the broken mount and then machine it down to the same hight as the other 3. Unless the frame is distorted this should be OK.
But if not feeler gauges and some shims will give me a secure 4 point mount.
“Soft foot” is often a problem when using a 4 point mount.
Does anyone know the tolerences for misalignment between the motor and gearbox?
Or will the rubber coupling take up any misalignment?.
PS. Can anyone tell me the correct spark plug?Silverfox

ParticipantOh, by the way. I have just found another MG. Working in a nursery in Helensburgh.

ParticipantI now have the engine unbolted and ready to lift out.
Found a couple of surprises.
A broken engin mount. This has been repaired using Angle iron bolted to the crank case.
Luckily I have a pal who is very good at welding aluminium.
Also how do you split the centrifugal clutch?
It is not seized and is free to turn. I have split the drive after the rubber coupling.
I presume there is a supporting bearing inside the clutch?
Any help appreciated.SILVERFOX.

ParticipantHello Lynn.
You seem to have been unfortunate to say the least.
Do you have any pictures? If so please can you post them on the forum.
Also, Scotland is quite a big place. Can you give an indication of your location?
I worked for an Agricultural engineers for a few years about 15 years ago.
We came across the odd Wheel Horse tractor.
Post some pictures and we will see.SILVERFOX.

ParticipantI am glad I asked.
No way am I going to lift that by hand.
I will rig up shear legs and a hoist.
Lift it up onto a Platform and slide it into the back of my Jimny.
It needs to go for cleaning before I start investigating further.
I have a pall with a steam engine cleaning machine. It is like magic. Thanks for all the help.

ParticipantI have had a look into the gearbox and at first glance it is in good condition.
It has oil and the gears seem to be in good condition.
Tomorrow I plan to lift out the Engine.
Can anyone advise me of the weight? As I am lifting it out by hand.
Once it is out I plan to inspect it and replace parts as required.
I will take some better pictures and post as work progresses. Thanks again

ParticipantVery interesting.
I have just acquired a MG5.
Once I have overhauled it I plan to use it to extract logs for my Son to mill into boards.
Far to much timber just gets cut up for firewood.
I have enclosed a picture of a large Ash being turned into 2″ boards.
I have also included a picture of a compiled bench made from the same Ash tree.
The contrast between the Heart and the Sap wood is striking.
Keep up the good work.SILVERFOX

ParticipantI know the location of another 2 or 3 Ransome MG tractors.
I don’t think they are for sale, but if there is an interest I will try and find out.SILVERFOX
