ParticipantThanks, that’s really helpful. No wonder I was getting so frustrated !
Is your “hooky” thing a B&S item or one you’ve made up yourself ?

ParticipantAny suggestions on how to use it when dismantling would be appreciated. It seems a rather big tool to fit easily in the comparatively small valve chest and between the coils of the springs.

ParticipantWas letting off steam really. I can see how the compressor would work well in re-assembling. My issue is in dismantling. You have to insert the compressor between the collar and the spring and close enough to the top of the spring in order to compress the spring sufficiently to remove the collar. Problem is the gap between the coils is very small and it is very difficult to get the retainers in.

ParticipantThanks guys !
Supplier wanted silly money what with postage etc., So, have now put piston back on using the old clips. They were hard work to get back in so, I can’t see them coming out on their own.

ParticipantSorry to hear that Alan. Pity there are so many dishonest people out there.
My machines are stored in a steel motorcycle garage and are all chained together.
It wouldn’t be impossible to nick them but, like you i think it would make things difficult for them.
My worst nightmare is arson.

ParticipantThanks Will, The Jacobsen’s very similar to the one I was thinking of.

ParticipantHooray, great news !
I remember once, a chap I knew stripping the carb and just about everything else on Royal Enfield 500. He said it had a newish plug but, it still wouldn’t go. I gave him my spare and it started straight away !

ParticipantThanks for the offers guys but, the cost of other parts needed far outweighs the value of the engine. This engine was well and truly knackered.
I’d rather spend the money on something I can actually make use of.

ParticipantJohn Cruse has no BSA Ignition parts left in stock.
Have now decided the engine will cost far more than it’s worth to overhaul and will probably sell it as spares.

ParticipantLike last year, a brilliant week-end. Much enjoyed giving the Howard and Wizard a workout. Even tried my little Atco 14″ but the grass was too tough. It’s crackly exhaust added to the 2 stroke noise from the SIMAR present !
Attached are a selection of photos that give a flavour of the atmosphere, including troublesome Trustys !!

ParticipantHi Jim,
What time will the farm be open to on Friday evening ?
I’ll be bringing a couple of machines over then and a couple on Saturday.
See you then.

ParticipantWelcome to the club !
I have a Howard 200 as well, probably a Bulldog. Mine has a Kohler 4HP engine retro fitted. Bags of grunt !
The Suffolk engine would be woefully underpowered for this machine. You will also find that the Howard belt won’t fit as the pulley on yours is not the correct twin pulley type and is not the proper diameter.
You would be well advised to obtain a JAP, Villiers or BSA if you can get one or perhaps a Briggs although being an ally engine it might not be heavy enough to give proper traction.
Getting the wheel off might be problematic if it has seized on as they are made of cast iron and don’t take too kindly to being persuaded ! (I know, I’ve a scrap one I tried to strip).
Otherwise, enjoy !

ParticipantJon Cruse sold his last one last year !
I know DH Day of old, he sometimes brings Flywheels into where I work to have them re-magnetised. He is also rather eccentric !
I’ll try and find someone who can test it for me (cheaply) If no good I’ll find a coil rewinder.

ParticipantI might be doing it wrong but, when I tried a resistance test it read nothing.
Bear in mind, it is at least 60 years old !

ParticipantI will give them (Mower centre) a try.
I have Donald Day who is local, am concerned that it might be prohibitively expensive to rewind, that’s all. Have no idea what work like that costs.
