ParticipantI’m not familiar with this particular engine, however I had similar problems with the running on a B & S ZZ with a Flo-Jet carb.
Check the throttle butterfly, is it worn on the shaft? this will allow the butterfly to flop around, causing the poor idle.
Also check that the needles/jets are seated snugly in the threads, if they are loose in the thread this can allow too much air through, causing problems.
Also worth checking that the fuel needle seats properly so you’re not getting too much fuel into the carb at a time.Joe.

ParticipantHave you replaced the clutch springs? They are probably weakened, and that wont be helping with the disengagement.

ParticipantHi all,
Just a quick update on the Ransome’s.
Progress has been a little slow this week as I have been engaged in matters of Land Rover suspension, however yesterday I managed to get the gear assembly removed, so now the tub is completly stripped.
So now begins the tedious task of cleaning, wire brushing and paint stripping a large pile of bits!.(not to mention trying to scratch together a few pennies for new parts).
Very little will probably be done the next few weeks as I have in-laws arriving next weekend, and I still have to try and get the damned Trusty running again ready for Lotmead.May 4, 2016 at 8:23 pm #20802joegrgraham
ParticipantA bit more progress.
Only the gear assembly to go, just need to shift two very stuck brake band pins, and how do you get to the bottom bolts? There are brake drums in the way…..Found a couple of nasties, I dont think the pinion bearing retainer should look like THAT! (Pic 2). I think a bearing must have failed at some time, one fell apart on the other side and they’re all stiff, so I shall probably replace the lot.
Also, the hubs are badly worn where they exit the final drive case (pic 3) which I can see causing sealing issues.May 2, 2016 at 9:12 pm #20774joegrgraham
ParticipantI’m glad I decided to do a full strip-dow .
Got into the final drives tonight, and they clearly havent seen oil for a while!.
The left hand pinion gear is badly worn and the right hand bull gear fell off! Due to a seized bearing.
I would upload some pictures, but my phone has been misbehaving since I dropped it in wet concrete the other day!!April 30, 2016 at 5:17 pm #20712joegrgraham
ParticipantAfternoon everyone.
Made good progress on the MG this week.
Sand blaster has been pre-warned and all that remains attached to the tub is the gear assembly and the final drives.
Anyone have any tips how to remove the rear bearing retainer for the PTO? it is unbolted and rocking, just doesnt want to budge off the shaft.April 24, 2016 at 5:22 pm #20669joegrgraham

ParticipantAnd the sad thing Dave, is that the shed/bench is tidy!!!
A place for everything, its just that place is on the floor…..April 23, 2016 at 4:23 pm #20658joegrgraham

ParticipantAfternoon everyone.
The family went shopping today, so i got a couple of very productive hours in on the MG2.
The original plan was to leave it alone cosmetically, however, due to it having had a poor repaint in the past, the fact I have to virtually strip it anyway, and the ease with which it is coming apart, I know that if I don’t repaint it, it will annoy me for ever more!! Plus, a friend has just bought a sand blaster…So today I have removed the engine, implement lift, drawbar, WC rollers and carrier and the rear idlers. Also numerous small bits and bobs.
Pics show progress so far.April 20, 2016 at 8:37 pm #20646joegrgraham
ParticipantThat’s good news about the box!.
One last question for tonight. How do I remove the sprocket wheel? (All the rollers are seized solid, a couple are broken, plus the hub seals need replacing.) Ive removed the six bolts around the flange (still need to drop the WC rollers) is it held on a taper? Does it need a puller?
Thanks,

ParticipantThanks again for the useful input.
From expeatfarmers comments, my toolbox may well be original, if it isnt, it is nicely made, so can stay. The floor is rotten, but we will worry about that another day.
I much prefer reliability and useability over a pretty paint job, so I think I will dismantled as much as necessary to do the repairs, then give it a light wire brushing to remove rust bubbles and flaky paint, then see what it looks like and go from there.
My phone, which has the photos on is about to go out the window, so I will try and upload a couple of pics later.

ParticipantThanks Neil.
Tonights activities have revealed that the MG is indeed an older restoration. I have found brushed paint, some stainless bolts, and am i right to presume that two bits of rotten ply are NOT correct for the floor?. Also, i noticed the toolbox is made of ply.
Now, the big question is, do I leave it and just fix what needs fixing, or given the level of dismantling I shall need to do, do I go the whole hog and do a full restoration??.
