I have been told the HS has a larger sump. I will have to dig out parts books and see.

There is usually a cover over the points which can be removed by sliding the retaining clip across and to side of cover, it is a bit of a fiddle.

trusty220, yes it is the same Auto Mower company, they were based locally at Norton St Philip.

hd trust, one problem with this engine is it in pieces and not associated with any mower parts. What is needed is engine manual.

I believe it could be a Farmers Boy, see my post about same machine at https://vhgmc.co.uk/forums/topic/unidentified-rotavator/
Another possibility which I have not had confirmed is Emery.

By coincidence someone has asked me for information about an Auto Mower engine, very similar, although cylinder and head are different but flywheel looks the same.

A 7″ wheel does sound an odd size.

Gearbox oils. GL-4 is OK for gearboxes that have brass components, mixed opinion about GL-5, some say yes some say no. I have Monro Tiller rotavators which use SAE140 in gearbox. Morris Oils of Shrewsbury do a good range of classic oils.

    Jon,
photos of gearbox internals showing gear selector mechanism. I would suspect the gear selector shaft MT569 may be rusted in the gear selector fork MT568. There is a spring and ball in the selector fork which might be rusted too, under the split pin. The only way to access these components is to split the gearbox, if you do this there is a nut and bolt underneath at front that is easy to miss, 9 fixings in total. The two halves will need gently persuading to come apart.

Neil, I wonder what other machines used that same carburettor or at least the same float?

Eric, it depends what service items you require. Engine parts, ignition system, bearings and seals should be obtainable. Control cables can be made. Other machine specific parts could be a problem however.
A scrap machine as a donor for parts may be the only option.

Welcome to the forum. If you have an old id plate to copy then it might be worth contacting Vintage Brass Plates they can do one off plates, but they are not cheap.
If you are planning to show at rallies etc, (Not very likely this year with Covid19), you will need public liability insurance, this is included with VHGMC membership, so well worth joining.

The Albion gearbox is a very compact design, they can be dismantled and rebuilt but I would not recommend it without a manual. Do you know which model of gearbox it is? I do have some manuals.

There are some fascinating garden tractors in the USA.
