If it’s not been used much it might be an idea to give it a few more runs to see if it improves, nice if it did. If not look up compression test diesel on You Tube.

It had been stood up for 10 years before i got it 2 years ago
so the run it had was the first in 12 years ill give it another run
    and see how it goes

It may help to give the engine some work to do like ploughing or cultivating, this would get the engine up to working temperature and hopefully burn off the carry over that you have seen.
You also need to consider the past history of the tractor i.e. Was it smoking when last run by the previous owner! Is this why it was laid up for ten years?

The only history i no is that it was just used on a saw bench till
the owner died then his son had it for 10 years and it was stood in
    a barn and done nothing

In view of it’s history it hasn’t had much work for years, saw bench wouldn’t be to taxing. I presume it’s got the BMC diesel engine, I think the early ones had a Perkins engine. when you take it for a run don’t be afraid to rev it, in other words give it a blow out.

I totally agree with other posts. Being on a sawbench it would have been running at fairly low revs.If at all possible, put her on a plough and find some heavy ground to turn over, failing that, find a big hill to drive up, anything to really make her work!.

I would change the oil and filters, oil that has been stood in an engine for a while builds up acids and carbon which can attack the bearings….
