If it’s a Peerless 6 or 800 series ‘box the recommended lubricant was Bentonite grease which, they said, resisted heat build up. What they didn’t say was that it tended to dry out not reach the areas where it was needed. If we ever had to open a ‘box to replace selector keys or bearings we used to refill with a semi-fluid grease. The slight downside to that was that because of the construction with open-ended bushes and no proper seals there was sometimes a little seepage if too light a grade of grease was used. In practice, this was not enough to cause a problem.
As has been said, the noise from the ‘box is probably normal – just not masked by the absent i/c lump.

I have posted a link to the very useful Zeus tables for identifying thread types, drilling and tapping sizes etc here is an image or two of my copy.
Sorry about the orientation but they were OK when they left here!

A set of thread gauges PLUS a set of Roebuck ZEUS Tables will enable you to identify just about any thread. The tables are also a mine of information about drilling and tapping sizes etc

Yes, my comment related solely to the use of the palindrome Rotavator to describe any rotary cultivator or attachment other than one made by Howards. Pedantic, maybe but sloppy journalism from those who, by virtue of their position as a magazine editor, should know better. They have a responsibility to get things correct.

Good that T&M have corrected their Villiers faux pas but a shame that they stopped short of acknowledging their misuse of Howard’s former trade mark.

    Carefully re-check the timing.

Not just the ignition but the cam as well, one tooth out is enough to cause odd behaviour.
Also what happens if you close the choke a smidge before shutting down.
After the rebore etc the engine may just be a bit tight.
    This may be of assistance.

Does anyone know of anywhere which refurbishes Albion gearboxes – it’s something that I really don’t have any confidence in.

Possibly try a vintage motor-cycle forum, such as

I have a Link-Hampson 25″ flail mower this machine is fitted with a Robin EY-2B
engine I believe it is more than 30 years old

That would be about right, last time I saw them being sold new was in the early 80s. Something tells me that they may have been distributed by Saxon who also sold a Japanese made triple that is now sold under the Baroness brand name.

Two other options. The condenser doesn’t have to be within the mag, you can hang one at a convenient place outside and just run a wire in to the points but possibly the best solution is to fit an electronic module, Meco or Nova that replaces both the points and condenser. Again, can be fitted either inside or outside the mag. Once fitted , maintenance free.

Sorry. Checked the photo again and saw the sparking plug.
    Senior moment.

May be on this occasion, but remember that Allis Chalmers had a tractor engine running on diesel fuel but with spark and not compression ignition.
