vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks a lot – I’ll give it another go at the weekend. I have a multi-meter so am going to try and test the Mag.
The guy had rebuilt the whole thing (or so he claims…) so I was hopeful that the engine is in good shape – but I just havent had the time to really concentrate on it – hopefully the weather stays dry for the weekend and I can have a more methodical approach to trying to get it started.

vhgmcbuddyMemberThanks both – I guessed as much – I saw that there were several versions of the cap and that one didn’t seem to have any sort of mechanical fixing….
So I just strip away a bit more of the HT lead sheath to expose some more copper, then wrap that a couple of turns around the sheath to create more of a friction-fit and connection, push it in, tape it up and test away….
This is a second Gem i own, together with a 350. All of them have come to me for less than £300 in total… and I really want to get one of them working!!
I’ll no doubt be back after I’ve done some initial testing on the Mag…
One observation – when I turn this Gem over – I can feel some resistance and there is the sound of aspiration from the engine, but it isn’t particularly difficult to turn over. There is a decompression lever, which when I squeeze that, it doesnt really seem to make any difference to how hard it is to turn – not much of a struggle to be honest.
I’m really not sure as to whether this is usual – does a JAP 600cc engine turn over relatively easy??

vhgmcbuddyMemberHi Alan I have been in contact with Paul who kindly supplied other related documents but he doesn’t have the instruction manual.
I did notice from searching the Web that a member on the old site, wychwar, did have one but he isn’t listed as a member on this new site.
Regards

vhgmcbuddyMemberHi all, I am trying to get hold of a copy of the instruction manual as shown in the photo gallery for the Farmer’s Boy. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one ?

vhgmcbuddyMemberJust like to say thanks Andy, Stuart and Charlie for all the good advice as usual.
I did everything you all suggested and it turned out that the timing had not slipped, but that the arrows on the flywheel and crankcase do not accurately set it. In doing it manually the arrows are now about an inch or so apart when the piston is TDC.
I am glad to say it now starts first pull every time, so thank you.Now on to the next question if I may – Is there a drain plug for the tiller oil? I have found the one for the clutch oil (and have drained and replaced that oil), but I cannot find one for the tiller section. I can see the filler plug for this, but not a drain plug. Any ideas?

vhgmcbuddyMemberwith crawlers you plough on land as opposed to in furrow. you use your last track mark from the opposite run as you mark depending on track width and furrow set up it depends where you run. as on my little ransomes I drive next to my previous track mark. so with a three wheeled row crop tactor you would drive with the rear wheel in the furrow as again depend on set up as to where. I would guess your front wheels will run some where near your last runs rear wheel mark. if that makes sense?

vhgmcbuddyMemberHello
I have a westwood Gazelle I use to cart stuff to and from my allotment . I have it insured but it is not road registered I do drive it on the road for maybe a quarter of a mile. Housing estate roads so not busy It is on the road about once a week on average . I have a flashin beacon, lights and a proper horn that works I pull a small trailer . I was advised by the local plod when I asked , that I probably did not need VED as the vehicle was deemed for agricultural use. Oh yes they said if in doubt drive on the pavement!!!
