ParticipantAdjustable stops look good. Iāve found in practice using my SIMAR plough in a number of competitions that I only need to have the plough fixed in the central position for the first run of the opening split. Then I have the plough floating for the rest of the plot. I found it too hard work to keep it fixed for subsequent runs, and properly adjusted the plough runs nice and straight floating.
Iāll be interested to see how yours works for you.

ParticipantI had a F80 years ago, basically the same machine. They do have a reputation for eating spark plugs. You might try swapping the plugs from the spare machine and seeing if that improves starting. I also found you had to be very careful with the amount of choke and throttle on starting. Try having throttle at low idle speed, crank a couple of times with full choke and assuming it doesnāt start try choke at progressively lesser settings. That usually worked for me.
Plugs can also get fouled up with oil because of the upside down engine. Make sure theyāre very clean before attempting start.
Good luck!February 16, 2020 at 8:16 am #33307roatavator
ParticipantYes, 6% is correct, SAE 30 or 40. Mix should be increased to 8% after engine overhaul. I use SAE 40 in mine, classic oil from the likes of Morris.
Transmission oil should be SAE 140, donāt use EP oil which can attack bronze in gearbox. Again I use a classic type oil.February 11, 2020 at 4:37 pm #33278roatavator

ParticipantCharlie. All the various SIMAR models with front exiting exhaust Iāve seen have the āusual ā stub exhaust. But many continental ones have large exhausts, sometimes a serpentine layout, incorporating exhaust boxes. Am I right in thinking they were SIMAR options or accessories? Perhaps they were available after market over here?

ParticipantIām sending booking today. Playpen may be a bit noisier than usual, should be bringing a couple of SIMARs.

ParticipantSuch an innovative machine and so versatile with all the attachments. It must have cost a fortune in development, then only to last a few years. Howard must have lost a packet on the 700 project. Despite availability of other Howard machines, still surprising they didnāt give it a longer run. Judging by the number of Villiers engine 700s still available it must have sold reasonably well in its short production run.

ParticipantIād guess by 1963 Howard had stopped production of the 700, probably explaining short run of the conversion.

ParticipantHi Andy.
No, Iām not bothered, except the volume of smoke sometimes outdoes my pipe!
Iāve ploughed some really hard dry land this year in top gear, and had it 2-stroking at length and yes, it smokes less then. Iāve been lucky enough to have prevailing wind blowing across the plot on most occasions, so neighbouring ploughmen are more affected than me!September 22, 2019 at 6:51 pm #32059roatavator
ParticipantYes Tom, mine too mostly leak from the seals. The 56 tiller used to leak quite badly but in recent years when itās seen more regular use itās stopped leaking so badly, I guess the seals had probably got dry.
Bent furrows were mine! But in my defence I was turning up huge stones. The plough itself is a lovely piece of kit and on decent ground does a lovely job.September 22, 2019 at 3:58 pm #32056roatavator
ParticipantHi Tom. Funnily enough I just came to the same conclusion today whilst out ploughing. The oil from the drain tap is definitely thicker than the 40 grade I put in the fuel.
Iāll just live with it. No point going to the trouble of doing the seal since it also leaks from the wheels as well. She actually runs a treat so Iām not bothered. Best location Iāve been to today for a match. Elevated field overlooking Blakeney Point in the distance. Some people said they could see seals, but all I saw were bent furrows!September 18, 2019 at 5:11 pm #32011roatavator
ParticipantPresumably stadium was being cultivated as part of war effort, Charlie, or is that a mad suggestion?
I use SAE40 as recommended in the Mechanised Gardening leaflet, Iāve got a couple of the measuring cans and always use those when mixing up.September 18, 2019 at 7:07 am #32009roatavator
ParticipantāFaintā Charlie? Thatās a lot worse than mine! I donāt feel so bad now.
Not sure about the carb, Stuart, Iāve not looked. However Iāve just realised Iāve got a short video from when I picked it up from Andyās some time back and it wasnāt smoking then. Obviously itās now on my fuel mix, but that same mix doesnāt make the others smoke. -
