Here is the latest Mystery Object for you all to have a go at identifying. We think we know what it is, but it would be nice to hear your suggestions just in case we’ve got it wrong ourselves!

It may not have come out too well on the pictures, but there are three spikes facing inwards just in front of the flexible spoon-like contraption.

    Best of luck!

Unfortunately you are both wide of the mark.

Here’s a clue to get you started:- it would have come from the dairy or beef rearing side of the farm.

I hope I haven’t given the game away!

We seem to have stumped you with this one!

The general opinion is that it is a home-made device for weaning calves and would fit around a calf’s neck like a collar. The weight of it would be taken on the spoon-like device until it raised it’s head to feed from mother’s udder; this would then overcome the spring tension in the spoon and bring the three short spikes into contact with the top of the calf’s neck, discouraging it from feeding.

There is also the remains of a leather strap tied to the loop at the bottom, so it may have been used in conjunction with a girth strap around the calf’s midriff to make it more effective.

Has anyone got another mystery object?
