Just talked to a helpful chap at Comma. The instruction book for this rotavator says use EP90 in the gearbox. I can’t find that near me, today, so after a chat I’m going to get some EP80W90 GL4 which the Comma man thinks will be a good substitute “similar to what would have been used in the mid-70s” (he was not so sure about the GL5 version and “yellow metals” being OK, saying “it depends”).
If Howards recommended gl4 then that is what you should use, which is more suitable for spur gears and the like
, gl5 id for diff’s, nothing to do with viscosity, also ep oils should never be used in gearboxes which have phosphor-bronze bushes as these will get eaten away by the ep, also gl5 has twice the amount of additives that will eat brass, copper and p/b.
