Hi all, can any one help with this one, I have a bantam rotovator which will not engage drive at all. The strange thing is that if you put it on it’s side gearbox down it engages fine but on wheels or laid on it’s side with gearbox skywards it will not engage at all, there seems to be a lot of play side to side of the wheels in the frame which is likely the problem but what is the cure?
So I checked the needle and it was set at 2.5″
I adjusted it to 2 3/8 and when started it was VERY smokey and wouldn’t start, so I suspect too rich. Perhaps it should be somewhere in between. I will try splitting the difference, but that extra 1/8 does seem to be most of the travel in the lean-wards direction.
Great thanks. Makes perfect sense. I will adjust it tomorrow.
Just unscrew the knurled / chrome top on top of the carburettor and pull the throttle slide out of the body.In the centre of the slide there is a small brass screw with a slot in it.Screwing it in lengthens the needle making a weaker mixture and unscrewing it richens the mixture.Set the needle to 2,3/8″ out from where it exits the bottom of the throttle slide. The Villiers handbook says a little adjustment either way may be required.
Thanks for that Stuart. I thought I had set the needle correctly, but its worth checking.
Can you give me a step-by-step so I don’t have to do it wrong more than twice?
🙂
OK just looked in my MK25C owners manual and the needle should be set at 2,3/8″ (two and three eighths inches) for the “Lightweight” carburettor.
Maybe the carb is set too rich ??.There is a correct length to set the tapered needle at in the throttle slide (using the brass screw on top of the slide).I will have a look in my Villiers MK25C book for the correct length if you think this may be your problem.
Hi all.
My Bantam is now running well thanks to the help here regarding rebuilding the Villiers V25C motor.
One niggly problem that I can’t seem to solve, is that the motor just doesn’t like starting when hot.
Any tips or ideas? It goes first pull from cold, but just not when hot.
Thanks all,
Jim
Hello wandr.
I may still have the part you mention, I will try to remember to look in the barn tomorrow.

Hi all
I have been restoring a Bantam and after a winter lay off am now proceeding apace! I have now obtained most parts required apart from fuel tank straps and mountings ( villiers 15) and a bowl type filter for the s12 carb. I did have some kind offers for straps but not sure if still available so can anyone assist please?
Howdy all.
Well Last weekend i attended a local rally at Portland Australia, the rally typically has a large number of tractors and fair few stationary engines and not much else but this year they sent me a letter asking for some rotary hoes, so rotary hoes they got.
In the Garden machinery side of things the rally sported:
Paul Westlakes Howard 2000 with toolbar attached (photo attached)
On top of that Dad and Myself took along a few machines.
-Howard Hauler L1 One ton hauler(restored by Reg Schueser)
-Howard kelpie with plough(restored by Reg Schueser)
-1949 Howard Junior (restored by myself)
-1947 Howard Cub
-Howard 200
-Kelly and Lewis Gardener with scarifier attachment(built springvale Australia)
-Modra with furrower(Built in underdale Australia)
-Landmaster L150 with potato lifter(Plated Firth Clevland Ballaarat Vic Australia)
-Howard Yeoman
-Howard Gem(farm modified to have mk5 JAP engine, non orig carbie and a VW aircleaner)
-Howard Bulldog
-Howard Bullfinch
-Howard Bantam
-RA Colwood(restored By Myself)
-Farmers Boy Mk2 with Toolbar
-Barford Atom 25 with plough
-Monro tiller Mk2
So as you can see we took them a nice range of machines and over the 2 days had alot of interest and alot of people talk about alot of the machines, and as usual heard alot of good stories from older fellas of how they used to use the machines when they were younger.
The Rally also sported one of your native English fellas a Master Thatcher from Salsbury who put on a demonstration for the 2 days.
A couple of pictures attached to show what the rally had to offer.
Thanks,
Dan
Coffee break, spent most of today over in the shed dismantling 2 of my Howard Bantams for resto. but time for a break and to add to this.
Well it was a while before i could do any more after priming all of those parts because i was waiting for those parts back from the sticker fella and i believe that in that time i picked up 3 landmasters and a colwood, the landmasters for free and $40 for the colwood from the same scrappy the Junior came from. So when i eventually got the parts back from the sticker fella dad had the colwood completely dismantled and most of the parts cleaned up ready for primer.
So as i painted parts i started reassembling the rotary hoe as i went so that i could still get the paint to all parts of the rotary hoe, mighty helpful those engine cranes aren’t they, mine gets lots of use, i think its more colors then the original red now to haha.
Each photo shows the hoe progressively put back together all nicely painted up.
OK Dan, here’s one for you. Spotted at Malvern Tractor show in 2013 was this single wheeler. It’s based on a Bantam and we all thought it may be a Foxie but apparently it isn’t, any thoughts?

H D Trust is almost old and he cuts grass so that would make him a lawn mower ie someone that mows lawns.
I can see where the argument lies, definition of a lawn mower and what the OLC cover as a club, is it only cylinder mowers or does it include finger bar mowers. To further complicate things the Allen scythe could be fitted with a cylinder mower, so to could a number of other garden machines such as Monro Tiller, Howard Bantam etc.
I am glad our club has a much wider scope.
Many thanks for the upgrade Charlie
