roatavatorParticipantThanks Andy
Being local it was too much to resist! It’s currently sitting on the Commer as I’ve no space for it. IF, and it’s a big if, the weather dries up a bit I’ll probably have it out at Stanfield next week. I imagine it’s pretty claggy underfoot at the moment.

roatavatorParticipantA short video from today.
Anyone got a spare black cover for the top of the handlebars pivot? Don’t think much of the current solution!March 11, 2018 at 2:36 pm #28137

Sorry to hear your tale of woe! I know the 2-stroke is the better machine but I can’t help myself!
I’m glad you said about the high speed adventures, I was sure I remembered you could change the gears to allow high speed trailering. Sometimes the old memory doesn’t let me down!
Keep us posted if you have better luck!

roatavatorParticipantExcellent! How do you find the Hirth in its comparative old age! I have very fond memories of the one I used.
PeterFebruary 23, 2018 at 10:36 pm #28034
roatavatorParticipantThanks gents both. I should have had my idle moment sooner! Still you never know, one day. It’s only a daft reason but the Hirth was the first machine I used as a kid. Never an easy starter, especially after I tipped it over and it ran flat out on the oil! After that I was the only one who could start it so if I was going to school I had to start it before I went and father left it running all day!
Daft reason, but then why do any of us do what we do with the old stuff?February 22, 2018 at 7:38 pm #28022
roatavatorParticipantThanks Chris. Well worth waiting for! They really look the part on the field, can’t wait to have a bash!
Don’t think I could bear to part with one, even if I had two, Andy!February 21, 2018 at 7:29 pm #27993
roatavatorParticipantHelp! Someone’s stolen the photo.

roatavatorParticipantThanks Tom
It’s certainly a lovely machine! I’m planning at least Stanfield and Little Ellingham in Norfolk and Weeley, hopefully some others as well. If you let me know in advance if you are going to any I’ll make sure I bring the plough.
Andy said he thought you used the plough “floating “ ie not secured against sideways movement. I think as a hopeless novice I’ll have to plough with it fixed!
All the best

roatavatorParticipantThanks Charlie, good to know where it first went.
Man after my own heart Dave, but if I find I can keep straight might enter a competition for a laugh. Might pick up the prize for the worst attempt!February 13, 2018 at 7:51 pm #27923
roatavatorParticipantThis new SIMAR is an early one. Serial 560040 must make it 1948. Hopefully Charlie will be able to provide information from the records. Be interesting to know where she went when new.

roatavatorParticipantHi Dave
As long as you promise not to laugh at my first attempts with a proper plough, and weather permitting, I’ll be at both.
PeterJanuary 29, 2018 at 7:42 pm #27819
roatavatorParticipantFrom memory of a long time ago the Hirth does get difficult to start. Usually needs the starting fuse and a really strong rapid crank over. They seem to have a relatively poor reputation amongst those who know (ie VHGMC members!)
But the 700 Hirth is a very rare beast now. Obviously if you can’t start it you’ve got little choice. But if it could be made to start better you’d be preserving one of the few left.January 7, 2018 at 10:05 am #27616
roatavatorParticipantBy coincidence got my entry in the post yesterday. I’ll be there making a load of noise as usual! Probably bring the latest acquisition (SIMAR 50) and if I can get longer ramps organised the Howard Hatz Gem.
This is a really good start to the working event season. Well worth a trip for those of you further away. Can’t recommend it highly enough. -
