There is two differnt types for the bantam in the back of my one shed, I’ve only got one rotten grass box though. I’ve also got the cylinder mower for the bullfinch but this goes out in front.

Interesting about the mower being offset , that makes sense. However, I’m fairly certain that this one was directly behind the Bantam, hence my original comment. It’s not too far from home so I’ll try to get another look at it. It is scheduled to appear on fleabay but the owner relies on his granddaughter to arrange such things so maybe not for a while !

Further to last posting, I have just been to the new gallery and found 4 photos of Bantam lawnmower attachments.
Well done Alan, the gallery is going to be most useful, particularly to new recruits.

    Hi there
If it is a Howard Bantam then the mower unit bolts on in place of the rotor box, the mower actually sticks out in an offset position to one side. They cut very well, the only problem I found is that if the mower encountered a bump in the ground or some other obstruction, the machine was nearly wrenched out of your hands as it wanted to swerve to the right violently.

They are not very plentiful now and the grassboxes are even more rare.

Many thanks for the replies to non starting bantam, now running again but I am foxed by the belt tensioner. I have looked at the Internet and can see that most of if not all of the tensioner items are missing which is letting the belt slip under load but I can’t find a good enough pic to see what’s not there. Does any one have a clear pic of the set up at all?

    Hi all
The non starting Bantam started after resetting the timing and tried it on the garden this pm. All good too start with but after a couple of passes the belt wouldnt turn the pto shaft and the engine died, checked plug and now has no spark. The drive belt seemed quite slack with the engine tilted to the drive position so not sure if its the right one, as for the spark no idea at the mo, however it did a very good job of the little bit it managed so keen to get it sorted, any one have any ideas?

    Hi all
I have a bantam rotovator which was given to me having not been used for some years. I have cleaned it all up and checked the engine over which has a good spark at plug, however it refuses to start. Engine is villiers 15 with s12 carb and I have tried all tricks including heating the plug and putting fuel down the plug hole, have had small puffs of smoke but no more than that. Does anyone have any ideas as I am officially fed up with pulling that rope!

I like the idea of driven wheels, also I used to use my Dad’s Bantam as a teenager on his smallholding along with several other interesting machines, jobber, farmers boy etc, so it’s also a bit of nostalgia. Thanks for taking the time to give me the info. I’ll have to keep my eyes open.

How does that compare in size to the Bantam?

Having just received my first Cultivator magazine I was interested to see items in the Market Place section offered for free. It is gratifying to know that people see the worth in these machine and would rather give them away than send them for scrap. Personally I would gladly give the Bantam in Norfolk a good home but I’m in Dorset and other commitments prevent me from committing to the 8 hour roundtrip. Hopefully someone closer will be able to help.

Thanks again for the Cultivator, it’s an interesting read.

Can anyone help? I’ve just bought a Howard Bantam, Villiers ohv engine, quite good nick apart from stuck valve (easily sorted) and no spark. Machine and engine are nicely designed and made, ohv seems very posh for the time (late 50s, early 60s?) flywheel comes off easily without the usual puller huffing and puffing, but it isn’t splined on the shaft so now I’ve lost the ignition timing: how many degrees btdc for points opening, and what should the gap be? Only after I got it off did I notice that there’s a mark on the casing and an arrow on the f/w but is that the timing mark or just the tdc? Also the machine’s forward drive selector is seized; what’s the remedy? And where (if???) can I get engine and machine parts pref. East Sussex……e.g. carb bits etc. Help/advice and comments would be much appreciated!

As Stuart says, if there is a lot of lateral movement, the teeth disengage on the axle shaft, maybe one has stripped. You will have to investigate , it is probably remedied quite simply.

There should be no sideways movement (or VERY little) of the wheels. If you strip it down im sure the wear will be apparent.
