Saw a tv programme, that reckons that people who hoard are mentally ill, so at least I know what ,s wrong with me, Just bought a Howard Bantam for no reason other than it,s only half an hour away(and cheap!) In anticipation I have also bought a Scythe fitting for it, I have downloaded a free manual for the Bantam, BUT, does anyone know if I can get a manual or instructions for the Scythe attachment? Regards Plonker

Peter,
Bloody awful,So bad I went and bought another petrol one. Diesel one Broke the heart of a Marine Engineer trying to get it started, I have been told it is drawing air and need to replace existing copper Gaskets all round or get originals ones annealed to restore seals.
Seem to spend all my time looking for Hirth D24 Engine parts suppliers.I thought of fitting manual wind up starter to it as at 70 my spirit is willing but the flesh is weak? but they cost a fortune. So I’m looking at fitting a Home made electric / Manual start for the Hand start (Electric drill & Long reach Socket with spur on end to catch starter on machine.
The petrol one is going but in poor condition.I also used 700 Rotavator fitted with Pick Tines in my youth doing new house gardens, It had a Bull dozer Blade and Wheel Conversion unit along with a road trailer which I travelled (Approx 12 – 15 MPH) from building site to site in west of Scotland, but that is another story. Not getting any work done on either machine just now due to weather conditions. Also have a small 3 wheeled power barrow undergoing restoration.
I know of a Howard Bantam fitted with Lawn mower complete with Rotavator as on web site front page, it appears in good condition and used to be shown a local Shows in East of Scotland. Ideal for some TLC and then showing & demonstrating as working unit. If anybody is interested I will put them in touch with Seller.
best regards,Ian.
Those tynes to the rear of the 2nd picture look remarkably like those fitted to the Howard Bantam???
Have you actually removed the rings and measured the gap in the bore. I’m a great fan of the F15 , and have one on a Howard Bantam , and find it easily out performs the original Mk15.
I wouldn;t have thought it was guide problems , as you have told us of the oil on the piston , I would suspect piston ring problems.

Any information and pictures on restoring the electrics to get this thing sparking would be greatly appreciated.
According to my service bulletins the very first Bantams used a Villiers MK25C 2 stroke engine and “drum” type wheel centre. You have an early model there !
I’ve recently purchased a job lot of Howard Bantam spares and accessories ( I wanted the mower attachments that were in this lot). With the job lot came three rolling chassis on inspection the one chassis has what I class as the normal wheels and the other chassis has wheels with a solid section the pictures should show what I mean. What I was wondering are these wheels genuine Howard items or a homemade item? Does anyone know the purpose behind this style of wheel.

Will the villiers engine from a Howard Bantam Rotavator fit a mk 1 Clifford Rotavator? Is it the same 25c engine?
Hello all, I’m new here…
I have recently acquired a full set of Howard rotavators…. A litle Bantam and a 350, which cost me £35 for the pair, and a Gem with the JAP engine which was £75…. i’m now in the market for advice on getting the two larger machines going. The Bantam isn’t really worth the effort right now…
Starting with the 350: The Kohler K141T engine was seized, with the piston and valves rusted. In trying to take off the exhaust muffler, one of the bolts has snapped off leaving a stud in the head casting… that’s a small problem compared to the rest of it…
With a lot of effort I’ve managed to get the valves out but there is a lot of rust around them.
First question – do you think a Dremmel with a polishing stone attachment would be suitable to clean up around the guides – the casting etc? Perhaps a little tickle to the valve guides themselves to make sure they are clean…?
Second question – the piston bore has a ring of corrosion about 1cm beneath the top, when the piston has been set for all the years its been left in the rain… at first the piston would only go up and down by turning the crankshaft back and forth, but having scraped a bit of that corrosion ring off and use of emery paper I can now do a full cycle, but it’s hard work and is far from smooth.
Is the next step to strip the rest of it down in order to get the piston out, clean up the rings?
Do you think i will need to take it to a machine shop and have the bore polished again…
Any thoughts as to whether this is worth all the effort?!
Lost items at Weeley.
I have at home a blade from a Howard Bantam, a lens hood from a camera and a pair of boots
size 9. If the owners of these bits would like to contact me I will try to return them to you.
Phone me on 01376 340072, or email me at djclark89@btinternet.com
Thanks, Dave.
Hi can anyone help me im trying to find out how old my howard bantam is its got a villiers engine and the machine number is 7708
Dave , they were never designed to run on sythetic type oils , many older twostrokes had bushes for crankcase bearings , and they relied on the film of oil(given by straight 30 grade) to form the crankshaft seal.
As Stew has correctly pointed out they simply will not run as they should , I suspect he is talking about a Bantam with a Villiers 25C , which although had ball bearing mains , still relied on a ph brass gland seal.
All my vintage gear (nearly all twostrokes) is used on a regular basis , and performs faultlessly on normal petrol , coupled with the correct grade of oil.
Hope this helps.
Andy.
A big thank you to all of you who made the trip to Weeley. The weekend worked out very well. I am not going to say too much cos I have just sent a long epistle to Will Haggle for the Cultivator. I have two items of lost property here. One is a camera lens hood and the other is a rotor blade off a Howard Bantam. If the owners contact me on 01376 340072 I will arrange to get the items back to
you.
Dave.
