If there are signs that the cylinder has been removed, someone may have covered up the transfer ports with a home made gasket. I’ve seen it!

They were designed in the 1920’s by Mr George Grist, a Lister Agent, demonstrating his Auto truck developed at the workshops of the Auto Mower Co.,Norton St Phillips, Bath. Lister of Dursley bought one to transport engine castings from the foundry to the machine shop. Customers saw them and asked where they could buy them, Lister approached Automower and negotiated a licence to build them. Engine used was a JAP 600cc air-cooled sidevalve, dry Sump as Automowers and the other product Autorollers all had JAP engines. Later on they were fitted with Lister air-cooled Diesel engines. Photo’s attached were taken at Gloster Steam Extravaganza, which was held a Kemble (Cotswold Airport) but has now moved to South Cerney, https://www.glossteamextravaganza.com/
