ParticipantYes filing a slot is a solution i thought of so would putting it on a lathe, even better, but i repeat only if one knows exactly where there original mark was, the crank had obviously turned and possibly moved every time the engine was pulled over thereby partially wiping out where it should be, but if i knew when ign occurred in relation to the coil and where piston should be i could solve the problem the other thing i could do is to make a key offset to alter ignition by 5deg but again we are talking time if it was my machine time is no relation to cost but when repairing for someone else it’s not worth the cost…………

ParticipantRef flywheel unfortunately the mark left by the key shearing was difficult to place exactly so it was just as near as i could get,as for getting a key slot cut it’s down to cost as well as position, cheaper to buy new flywheel but what is a ten year old machine worth £28+ on bay !,when i have come across this problem of key shearing before yes it’s mostly due to shock which on a hedgecutter is easily done,as for ignition what about the old B/S one’s where you can replace the coil and fit an electronic one and do away with point’s and condenser and still use the old flywheel and it work’s………….

ParticipantJust to add when refitting bolt’s or nut’s use a small amount of copper grease on the thread’s this will enable them to be undone at a future date as long as the nut or bolt is not required to be thread locked,i have used copper grease for many year’s on agricultural machine’s even if it’s not me that would dismantle it again….

ParticipantREf the chamberlin tractor it would be no good over here many year’s i had to fit wider wheel spacer’s to a Ford FW30 [steiger american tractor sprayed blue]about 265hp it started off with single wheel’s then double’s using spacer’s between the wheel’s but when it was being used on an old hop farm in Kent and it was wet the space between the wheel’s picked up load’s of mud this meant less traction so the brain’s at Ford’s asked our firm to fit wider spacer’s a day’s work which gave the wheel’s a chance to pick up even more mud!! and it was not until wider tyre’s [super single’s] which were about 1.5 time’s the width of the original’s did it help to cure the problem these tractor’s are drawbar machine’s ideal to pull stuff but not like our one’s which use three point linkage on the hydraulic’s to lift implement’s and can use this system to increase traction.i have seen an early Fw30 try to pull two Micheal More mole plough’s it just sat there and spun the wheel’s.

ParticipantREF the County seahorse when i worked ar Doe’s we looked sfter one of these belonged to [AWRE atomic weapon’s research establishment] on fouloness island and wash used at one time to recover fired shell’s from the mudflat’s,a pig to work on. REF the sub i took a photo of that year’s ago i was with an aircraft recovery group and it had been reported that a ME 109 had crashed off off bowness jetty [built during the war to unload oil tanker’s] we never found anything and as for the mud if one stopped moving it started to suck one down so yes very dodgy i don’t think there is anything on the sub worth having.

ParticipantAs WP say’s about an ungoverned engine yes this is normal, put the machine into work cutting grass and the rpm would drop pretty quick then you will find that you would need to open the throttle to get it to cut, the heavier the work the more the throttle need’s to be opened, if the engine was a four stroke doing the same work it would be governed and the throttle would open it’s self dependent on initial throttle setting when under load, when not under load the rpm would be limited by the govenor, which you engine has not got hence the rpm get’s fairly high, the torque figure is higher at a lower rpm on the four stroke and it is normally quieter as well, because it can be run at a lower rpm figure.
