The number in the oval is date of manufacture. Not sure what other number is, could it be part number?

Once timing is set it is a case of checking as you tighten. Once flywheel is a bit more than finger tight it should not move with further tightening.

I took one of the bolts out on mine and can confirm they are M12 but have a 22mm head.

Whatever you do don’t use fins on flywheel to lock it. One method some suggest is turn engine until piston is about half way up cylinder, then push thin rope (starter cord) in through spark plug hole to fill space above piston. Then gently turn engine till it locks.
I have used a Boa Constrictor tool to grip outside of flywheel.

    Always difficult to estimate values.
We could advertise it our club magazine at no cost, just send e mail to vhgmc@btinternet.com with details, your name, contact phone number and location. An alternative would be an online auction site.

The way to get flywheel nut tight is to hit spanner hard with a hammer. Villiers did make a special spanner with a lump on the end for hitting with a hammer.

If it is a taper lock this video shows how they fit.

Gap should be set when points are fully open.

Looking at my Allen Scythe there are spacers, look like large washers approximately 1/4″ thick.

That plate looks different to the one fitted to my machine. I will see if I can get a photo or two of the one on mine. I do have drawings for one on the pc but they are in a format I can no longer open.

The manual only has basic information about engine eg spark plug type, it does not cover strip down and rebuild or fault finding. It does have a parts list with diagrams. If you require a copy please send your e mail details to the club e mail address contact.vhgmc@gmail.com

Thanks for adding the photos. Plenty for our Allen Scythe experts to look at. I have an Allen Scythe buried in the shed and will see if it has any spacers.
