Yet another important site that has been redeveloped and lost forever. Maybe we ought to record as many of these buildings as we can whilst they are still standing.

You will need to exert quite a bit of force to unstick the taper, that’s why the nut was designed in the way that it was. Don’t try it with an open ended spanner because you will just round off the hexagon. If you can get a hexagonal socket that will be the best way because it drives off the flat faces, whereas a 12-point socket or ring spanner only drives off the tips of the points and is more likely to round off the hexagon again.

    Good luck with it.

Commando Gnome looks like a younger version of ex-Shopkeeper. Are they related, perchance???

I can confirm what Angus says is true- I’ve been using unleaded fuel in a JAP 6 on my Trusty for nearly twenty years doing ploughing matches and generally pottering about at shows. It doesn’t get hot or overworked and so the valve seat recession isn’t an issue- at least it hasn’t been up to now.

I don’t use a lead substitute either, but if I see the valve gaps closing up that will be my first course of action.

The Plowmate does have a differential which makes it very good at turning and manouvering in tight spaces, but the one thing it does not have is a diff lock to lock both wheels together. This results in the machine having a tendency to spin the landwheel constantly and it is nearly impossible to keep in a straight line when you encounter normal field conditions. It works fine on well-tilled ground (which is what it was designed for) but these days most ploughing matches are held on open fields with hard, compacted soil.

Both the Trusty and the Anzani will cope with these conditions because they have a positive drive to both wheels and you have to disengage a wheel to turn them (i.e. neither has a differential).

That is why these machines dominate so much; if you want something different have you thought of a two-wheeled Garner tractor? They are hard to find but are certainly unusual.

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to the club as well! That is a very interesting story about one of the lesser-known brands of horticultural machinery.

If you are restoring it could I suggest that you take photo’s and put the restoration on the Projects section? I’m sure our members would be very interested in keeping up with it.

Best of luck with it, and if you need help sourcing parts or how to do something don’t hesitate to ask.

It looks like a very expensive way to rake the allotment- I can see why it didn’t catch on! Well done to Charlie for saving it. These must be so rare these days, it has been difficult even finding a photograph of one.

The photo that you have posted looks like a heavily modified Fordson, although it is narrower and lower than the standard model.

I will echo the rest of you- brilliant weekend and I thoroughly enjoyed myself (despite losing part of the throttle linkage on the way there!).

The roller is running better than ever now thanks to the heavy work-out of the Weeley Wander; the hills certainly got it quite warm and the heavy smoke had all but disappeared at the end, with the added bonus that I now have a lot of leaks to sort out!

Well done to Dave Clark and team, and a hearty “Thank You” to Dave Weeley and family for letting us take over their farm for the weekend.

    Looking forward to next year.

…..and I have this picture of a heavily modified Trusty Steed which was used for lighterage work. It does not appear in any official brochure, so you may not have seen it before.

Bring them anyway, Charlie. If all else fails I’ll have my tools with me- I may need them for the engine on the roller!

    See you there.

The Trusty Roller should be mobile but I’m having trouble with the brakes at the moment, but they should be working come the big weekend.

If Dave Weeley has got any moles on site they had better watch out!

You could always download these manuals from the Ransomes Jacobsen wesite for free. The Mastiff is still a current model and has gone through quite a few changes over the years but the basic chassis and how to use and adjust it remain the same.
