I expect most of us have had the task of driving wood stakes in for fencing, well if its heavy clay with flints and hedge roots it can be a bit testing, I have a good 6” inch hand auger and its ideal and easier than using a spade but if you have roots or stones the auger gets caught and takes time and effort getting the odd stone or root out, however I needed to move only around six roughly 4”inch posts that had been driven in getting on for 2’ft and just using a normal post rammer some posts would have been split. A 4”inch auger would have been a real pain with the stones nearly as big plus the roots and clay as would ether jam or just screw into the ground. So had an idea as roots needed to be cut or torn out and the stones needed to be loosened and teased out. I had 4ft of 3/4 inch pipe and around 6ft of 1×1/4 flat that I cut into 1” and 1/2 long bits, and no measuring just held and welded on anyhow in a sort of spiral as if it din’t sit quite it was still welded as it might not have worked so not spending time, roots were just cut of or chewed away and stones loosened and able to easily get then out, I used an large ancient old drill that only ran at 225rpm and with a bit of rod with three flats machined in so the chuck had to grip and not slip it worked a treat, clay came out in sort of 1 inch cubes and fine roots with the very sticky clay did clog up but not a problem, longest job was drawing the posts out.
