Several years ago I came across a truck. It had new paint work and a timber body and looked great – the timber work was superbly done. The only problem was that the mechanical side of things were rather suspect. It was christened The Wonder Truck because it was a wonder it started, a wonder that it moved under it’s own power and a wonder that the paint managed to keep the tinwork together so well. New paint doesn’t necessarily mean a working machine.

Recently I’ve been looking through the old forum stuff and found reference to this truck and remember the following that went with it called ‘The Wunder Truck’. Many thanks to the members who helped me compile it at the time.

    The Wunder Truck

I was looking through an auction site
And guess what I have seen?
    I’ve spied a three-wheeled Wunder Truck
    It’s a really rare machine.

The advert says it’s all complete
    Engine running like a dream
    The photos all look excellent
    And the paintwork is supreme.

I dreamt about that Wunder Truck
Perfect engine, glossy paint and sparkly chrome
So I’ve bought it for a massive sum
So excited, can’t wait to get it home!

    The Wunder Truck is brilliant
Appears all shiny and quite clean
    I drove around my garden
And I waved just like the Queen!

    But…

On Monday there are some problems
The brakes they do not work
They make a funny squealing sound
And the pedal starts to jerk

    On Tuesday the engine’s rattling
There could be a lack of oil
Now it’s banging like a drum
And the whole thing starts to boil

On Wednesday the front wheel has a puncture
All three tyres are badly patched
    They’re also different sizes
And the left one’s wonky, bald, mismatched.

On Thursday the paint looks suspect
    Whilst wiping off some dust
The two-pack’s coming off in sheets
The swines have painted over rust!

On Friday the gears are crunching
Out of reverse it will not budge
The gearbox has a crack in it
    And the oil resembles sludge

On Saturday the seat fell off
Then the lights they flashed then fused
I think that Wunder Truck is dead
    I’m really not amused

On Sunday I have had enough
The repairs are off the scale
So I’ve photographed the bloody thing
And put it up for sale!

Many a true word spoken in jest, Alan. I wonder how many of our club members could say that they have had similar experiences?

It’s all too easy these days with online auction sites and buying stuff from a photograph.

All I can say is that I’ve been lucky!
