Small Motor Scythe

    There was a small motor scythe on the horticultural section of the Selwood Steam Rally over the bank holiday. The owner thought it was a Shay but I’ve looked it up and it’s a Cyclo, made by Cylinder Components of Birmingham. Introduced in 1956 it had a Villiers Mk 2g 70cc engine, there were two models, III H,with Jalo-type non-powered wheels and model III P with powered wheel. The cutter bar is the same as the small one on a Merry Tiller, which I’ve pictured for comparison…

    They probably bought the mower parts from Wolseley which was also a Birmingham based company. They certainly look the same in the photo’s.

    I think it was probably the other way round as the Cyclo was introduced in 1956 and Merry Tillers first appeared in 1958, I’m not sure when the Merry Tiller cutter bar came along….
