I am in the process of “doing up” a Howard 200 I recently bought at the LVMS Spring showing.
Having partially dismantled it to give a lick of paint I have also put oil in the two transmission units. I have noticed though, that oil is now leaking from the ends of the tunnels on the Rotary Hoe transmission unit. I am guessing the seals are worn. I really don’t want the hassle of trying to remove the old ones and replace them and was wondering if a cheaper way round the problem would be to replace the oil with a semi-fluid grease like Silkolene Renolit EP00 which is used in Royal Enfield motorcycle gearboxes (to prevent leakage).
Or, should I just accept it will leak and keep the oil topped up regularly ?
Would welcome any thoughts on this.
