Allen scythe re-engining

Hi all, has anybody sucessfully re-engined an Allen scythe (Model F) with say a modern Honda GX160 engine?
I want to get away from the Villiers 25C 2-stroke.
I can probably do it but if anybody has done it and has some tips, they would be welcome!

I have one here that has a Kohler engine on it – funnily enough, it is about to go back to a Villiers 25C as I can get the parts easily, and it is suitable for field maintainance (it is a working machine). The engine was changed due to the original seizing, but I have managed to obtain a short engine to rebuild it.

Didn’t the very late ones come with kohler s factory fitted?

This one is definatly a bodge job, and it came with its original seized Mk25c. There is an adaptor plate to amtch the mounting holes between the scythe and the engine, and a horrible arrangement for the throttle.
The owner is familiar with old 2 strokes, so returning it to its original spec is probably for the best!

Some also had a Villiers MK25 4 stroke fitted. I have heard that the 4 stroke models could seize up if worked on slopes due to lack of lubrication, not a problem on a 2 stroke.

Mine is an 11c and running really well but took a bit of sorting out. I’d love to have a four stroke. I saw someone weld a plate on the handle bars and mount the engine there. Then they put a pulley on the gear box and ran a belt down to it from the engine. Look a bit odd but would have done the job. I don’t know what the balance would have been like though. If the link works heres mine, cutting bar still needs a lot of work. Ledger plates are mostly stuffed.

Really nice to see a two stroke one running properly. I had. Mk 25c that would run so long as you kept tickling the carb plunger, guess the crankcase seals needed doing.

They are odd these two strokes, they wont run when you do everything perfect. Then when you give up they run like a charm! But when they run well the are fantastic engines.

Hi.
I have just removed the villiers engine from an allen scythe and the cork gearbox gasket/insert fell apart. Any idaes about a replacement for the cork piece

Is it a cork tube you need or large felt washer??

What model Allen scythe do you have??

I maybe able to help if its the large washer

are you confident enough to make a new cork one,as you can buy sheets of cork in different thicknesses. its not hard if you can make one from gaskit paper ,your in good stead to make one from cork. good luck.

They are not to hard to make, this is the one I have just made for mine.
