ParticipantI have now stripped the BSA 120cc that I removed from a Howard Bulldog.
It is in need of thorough overhaul. All the parts I need are available from Meetens except for the ignition coil and points.
Does anyone know of a potential source for these parts or a way round the problem. I am reluctant to spend £250 or so on engine parts if the thing is never likely to run !
Only option I can think of is use a motorcycle coil and battery and run a total loss system.
Over to you !

ParticipantThere are specialist ignition people about that can rewind
your coil for you, so do not despair. I have a man in east
Essex who is a wizard at that kind of work. If you have trouble
finding one in your area give me a call.April 20, 2016 at 2:28 pm #20636charlie
KeymasterTry Jon Cruse at The Mower Centre, Hailsham.

ParticipantI will give them (Mower centre) a try.
I have Donald Day who is local, am concerned that it might be prohibitively expensive to rewind, that’s all. Have no idea what work like that costs.

ParticipantHave you had the coil tested , 120cc components were Lucas , and generally very reliable , never be put off by the visual appearance of a coil , testing it would be my first course of action.

ParticipantI might be doing it wrong but, when I tried a resistance test it read nothing.
Bear in mind, it is at least 60 years old !

ParticipantJon Cruse is available in working hours, and runs a postal service too.
01323 842477. He is most helpful, and will help if he is able to.
He does have a website too, there could be a link from this site.April 20, 2016 at 10:47 pm #20649will-haggle
ParticipantD.H.Day is very expensive, used to charging vintage car enthusiast prices!

ParticipantYour coil needs to be tested using a proper ignition tester , multimeters and the like are no good for testing coils.

ParticipantJon Cruse sold his last one last year !
I know DH Day of old, he sometimes brings Flywheels into where I work to have them re-magnetised. He is also rather eccentric !
I’ll try and find someone who can test it for me (cheaply) If no good I’ll find a coil rewinder.

ParticipantJohn Cruse has no BSA Ignition parts left in stock.
Have now decided the engine will cost far more than it’s worth to overhaul and will probably sell it as spares.

MemberThe BSA 120cc coil can be very temperamental I did have a couple of scrap engines that I weighed in a couple of months ago. I wish there was somewhere that I could of advertised them so someone could of had some use of them for nothing but I needed them gone ASAP and couldn’t wait for the cultivator to come out and people I find generally mess about to much on eBay. If I find anymore I’ll let you know and you can have them but I’ve nearly got to the bottom of my clear out. I think George at villiersparts had some at one time, maybe worth a try?

ParticipantThanks for the offers guys but, the cost of other parts needed far outweighs the value of the engine. This engine was well and truly knackered.
I’d rather spend the money on something I can actually make use of.
